Gdańsk - forgotten district.

Dolne Miasto (Down Town) is the newest of the old downtown districts of Gdańsk. It was created on a large, drained lake and for a long time it was even more intersected with water channels than today. Canals drained excess water from marshy lands on which subsequent plots had been marked out and built on consistently since the 17th century. Earlier, since the Middle Ages, there were also vast meadows serving as pastures around the non-existent swampy lake.

The main axis of the district was Meadow Street (formerly Weidengasse). In the middle of it was one of the many water channels. Filled in at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, it was transformed into a tram route and today a pedestrian avenue. The district partially survived the war damage and today the city is slowly restoring its former glory.
