148. The Island, by C.L. Taylor

Owned?: No, library Page count: I forgot to get it down. Like 300ish? My summary: Six kids are away on a survival holiday in the jungle, on a remote island. But when their tour guide suffers a stroke, they are left stranded with no way out, no help - and a sabotaged boat. Pretty soon, it seems that all their worst fears are coming to life. But who is terrorising them? And how far will the terror go? My rating: 1/5 My commentary:

Ugh. I literally just picked this up at random off the YA shelves because I needed something to read on the bus back home, and honestly? I wish I spent the time staring out of the window and daydreaming instead. This was just uninspiring. It was pretending to be a mystery, but the mystery itself was boring, and the characters were boring, and everything about it was just...ugh. Ugh is the most I can come up with to say about it.

So first off, this had an undertone of racism that I didn’t like. The island is off the coast of Thailand, and the only Thai character is the guide, who has a stroke and dies on day one. I didn’t...like that. He’s more a prop than a person, you know? Granted, so are most of the kids. I couldn’t tell them apart outside of their genders. And most didn’t have much in the way of definable character traits. Their focus was weird, who cares about relationship dramas when you’re stuck on an island? It felt like a random events plot honestly, like Taylor was just throwing more spaghetti at the wall in the hopes that something would stick.

But it didn’t. There was no tension. They’re on the island seven days - and they know that when they don’t come back, their parents on the mainland will send a boat immediately. The struggle to get food and water is never in focus, nor is the struggle to get shelter. Early on it’s mentioned that they should keep the fire lit at all times and then it just...stops being a concern, really. Two kids from the mainland appear in a boat to terrorise one character for no reason, then disappear immediately, so there’s no tension from how they’re stranded or anything. The focus is on the whole ‘fears coming true’ thing - early on they share each kid’s worst fear, and then they start happening. Except the language they use is ‘phobias’ coming true, which sounds really clunky and doesn’t really evoke anything to me. Like, is ‘our phobias are coming true!’ something a real person would say? ‘Fear’ is both more natural and more evocative. But it doesn’t matter, because the answer to the mystery is...boring. Turns out it’s not happening, one of the kids just has mental health issues and is seeing things. And because the survival angle isn’t emphasised, that means there was no danger. Just...nothing going on. Boring as shit.
