Roots
I wish I could cling,
Like the trees do,
Like plants all do,
Tie my feet to the ground,
Let roots sprout from my toes,
And make a space forever mine.
Stand through the wind and rain,
Solid in the ties through earth.
Smiling in the changing plain,
Watching time make it’s worth.
I wish I knew what those roots are like,
Stretching down into the dark,
Lengthening to find water, minerals,
Finding the ground to shape its mark,
And strengthen the body on the surface.
I wish I could take root outside,
The elements and weather I’d abide,
To know one spot was ever mine,
Wouldn’t knowing that be fine?
