A/N: I might have gone overboard with the mermaid AU. Get it, overboard. Um, once again it’s a collab with @batlazysharkwombatuniverse and I hope you enjoy it.
Nazo looked over the deck of his ship, S.S Blackshore, smiling as Clara’s head appeared above the water. He waved, watching her swim closer to the hull.
“She’s been following us, you know,” Sonic said, looking over the deck.
Nazo nodded, walking off and lowering himself in a rowboat into the ocean. The rowboat swayed as it settled, the dark water lapping at the edges of the boat.
“Hey,” Clara said, leaning against the lip of the rowboat. “What brings you down here?”
Nazo smiled, setting the oars aside. “I wanted to see you since you keep following us,” he answered, laughing.
Clara blushed, half of her face hidden in the ocean. “You said I could join your crew,” she said, shrugging. “since I can’t be on the ship, I decided to follow you guys. How do you think you’ve been catching fish all this time?”
He nodded, running a hand through his hair. “Thank you. I’ve been looking into mermaids myself, pretty interesting.”
“We don’t really have homes,” she said. “Most of the caves around here are empty.” She looked around, making sure no one was looking at them. “I want to show you something,”
He opened his mouth to reply, his eyes wide as Clara’s lips met his and the rush of cold water seeping through his clothes. He panicked, trying to push himself up as Clara dragged him down.
“It’s okay,” Clara said, holding onto Nazo. “You can breathe.”
Nazo paused, slowly parting his lips. He looked at Clara, holding onto her as she began swimming again. Nazo gasped, swimming to the entrance of the cave Clara led him to.
“What did you—.” He stopped, feeling the familiar sand between his fingers. “This is where we first met,” Nazo said, watching Clara swim towards him.
“It’s where I live,” she replied, smiling. She sat beside him, flicking her fin in the water as it rose and fell. “My family should be back in a few minutes,”
Nazo nodded, glancing around the quaint cave with seashells used as decorations. “Is it alright for them to meet me? I am human after all,” he asked, smiling.
“Yes, you’ll be the first human they meet. Especially my little sister.” Clara said, slipping back into the water. “I’ll take you back to the ship later.”
“Alright,” The door opened as Nazo said this, the water stirring at the newcomers. He hoped he’d make a good impression.
