Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, British "The Women of Amphissa" (1887) The buildings which surrounded the stage-like setting of the portrait are reminiscent of the "architectural exactitude" of the neoclassical style. Both the clothes the women wear and the building's style seem inspired by the Greeks and Romans.
Eastman Johnson, American "A Prisoner of the State" (1874) Found in the Clark's permanent collection, this painting reminded me of Goya's work in "Los Caprichos." The figure, who's face is illuminated by the meager light from the barred window, leans against the cell wall. The lighting (chiaroscuro) hides the, most likely unpleasant, prison backdrop. Unlike the absolute desperation of Goya, the aged man shows his imprisonment through his gaze out the window. Acceptance? Longing? Hope?
