A lovely surprise arrived in the mail – a hand-turned cup of claro walnut made my my nephew, Tyler. The cup is about 60 mm tall and 60 mm in diameter. It is perfect.
I think I'm going to assign it the mundane but useful task of holding colored pencil stubs on my work table.
Claro Walnut
Native to California, Claro Walnut is a close relative of Black Walnut. Rootstock from this species is commonly grafted with English Walnut to increase the latter’s production in the California climate. While this practice can produce some striking wand wood, it often muddles the magical temperament. Normally, Claro Walnut seeks similar masters to Black Walnut, if slightly less self-aware. Wood taken from grafted trees can vary widely in preference. Sometimes these wands behave like either pure English or Black Walnut. Other times, they serve as a middle ground between the two, demanding masters who are fairly intelligent and honest. In a rarer cases, the preferences completely alter, to either a slow minded mage, or one who maintains a great deal of self-deception.
Stone Wolf Guitars UK release their latest creation – the Nova Claro Walnut custom. The Stone Wolf Nova features some very exotic tonewoods including a body with a Wenge, Purpleheart & Bubinga laminate with a figured Claro Walnut top. The neck is a laminate of Bird’s Eye Maple, Amazaque & Purpleheart with a fretboard made from Yew, Ebony and turqoise resin. The pickups are a pair of Bare Knuckle Black Hawks. Elly Claro Walnut Back & Sides
Had this cut off lying around for a couple years and finally got around to making it a coffee table.
Patching some holes caused by buried metal with wenge and walnut end grain.
