We can’t believe that this is our last class for the summer. We plan to roll this project over into the fall.

During this class Rachel covered how to rephrase or paraphrase research information students collected on their birds. Noelle demonstrated some beginning embroidery stitches.

We can’t believe this is the last class of the month! Our students have been doing great with ESL and art homework submitting some great examples of what they do outside of our live sessions. We pushed forward on our bird projects learning the anatomy of a bird and comparing it to our own bodies. Students were brave and took some chances with drawing realistic, minimalist, and even cartoon birds (4ry old Izel oversaw her mom Xochitl’s drawing of Woody WoodPecker). We also discussed some possible family projects for the fall.

Artes Sin Barreras July 28 2020

Today we kicked off a new project featuring birds. Rachel found an interesting article last year that inspired this project. The article provided Rachel with information on the astounding amount of birds that die due to human activity as well as a list of local birds that can easily be spotted in the Chicago area.This is a timely project since birding has grown in popularity since the COVID 19 lock down began and also because it connects to our big idea of preservation. Noelle also compiled a list of endangered birds of North America that offers an exotic array of colorful and unusual birds. Noelle was surprised to find that a majority of the birds on the list were native to Mexico.

We anticipate that students will likely not complete this project so it will likely roll over into our Fall classes. Today we will tackle selecting a bird of individual students’ choice and creating a line drawing of their bird.

During this class Rachel worked with some students on revising their recipes. Rachel led a conversation about some other culinary vocabulary. Noelle demonstrated how to tackle difficult textures and finishing touches on color drawings.

Rachel wrapped things up by asking about students’ feelings on the plan to start CPS schools amid the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic. This conversation may continue into our Thursday class since we have noticed a trend of more students joining the live Thursday class.

Today we had a good number of students join our live zoom session. Rachel took a new approach to teaching “will” and won’t" statements and questions. Noelle demonstrated how to use complimentary colors to create rich shaddows. We also discussed the term “Jíbara” means while reading “When I Was Puerto Rican.”

We had a dip in live attendance this class but we are highly aware that our connection to students extends outside of the live zoom sessions. Rachel recently mailed out some charts to help students navigate measurements for writing their recipes. Vicky informed us that many of our students cultural preferences are to add ingredients based on feel rather than specific measurements. We also discussed the good manners referenced in the book “When I Was Puerto Rican.” as well as the manners we practice at home and pass to our children.

Noelle covered the various uses of artist erasers and how to layer with colored pencils.

We are thrilled to see the number of students joining our live sessions. We are also beginning to receive even larger numbers of student work submitted via text message.

This class Rachel reviewed some consents we covered in June and led us through some of the book “When I Was Puerto Rican.” Noelle talked us through the process of getting started with our individual recipes that we will contribute to a collaborative recipe book.
