They see users as seeking one or more of the following benefits from the site: downloading software that does not have spyware or software as a gesture of dissatisfaction with the software develop; providing software for people with older hardware; disallowing corporations from dictating which version of software will be used; and archiving cultural artifacts. The subtitle of the site, unsurprisingly, is “because newer is not always better!” Software is available for different operating systems and greatly varied: from nostalgia-driven programs like MSN Messenger and AIM to utilitarian CD burning software to virus-inducing programs like LimeWire. The site is equal parts nostalgia, counterculture, and utilitarian.

The website, in how it presents itself and doesn’t, touches on themes we’ve seen throughout the quarter. The site is a form of tactical media, providing programs that companies do not want used after releasing an update (and somewhat actively push users off of). The website asserts that the development of software programs is not as linear as we might think — that better software perhaps does not follow the aging of the Internet. The website is politically bent and yet somehow subdued enough to induce nostalgia about how we used to interact with the our computers and the World Wide Web.

This internet phenomena began on Tumblr, with the page titled “Dogshaming,” as an internet meme in 2012.Dog shaming is when a dog owner creates a sign to describe something naughty that their dog has done. The owner then takes a picture of the dog either wearing the sign, or sitting next to the sign, and sometimes includes the scene of the crime. The first dog shaming images was posted by Pascale Lemire of her Dachsung who had eaten her husband’s underwear. The concept was then turned into a Tumblr blog by Chris Mohney, the editorial director of Tumblr, and it then went viral after he added the ability for other to upload additional images to the site. Dog shaming has since been uploaded and shared via Tumblr, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Readdit, BuzzFeed and many more sites. We have discussed in class how when phenomena go viral - they cross over into other platforms/channels and rarely stay in the original platform in which it was posted.

The success of this phenomena can be due to the collaborative and curative aspect, as any internet user with the ability to upload a photo can join in on the movement. We love to laugh and dog memes provide a lot of laughter. Anyone with access to the internet is able to interact with these photos in any way they please - laugh for a few minutes, share with friends on additional networks, and even add to the collection. This illustrates a creative way in which a group of people (pet owners) collaborate to create exhibition spaces on various websites of their naughty animals. Eventually, Pascale Lemire published a best selling book of naughty pups which also illustrates the way art on the internet may translate into art in the physical form of a book. Dog shamming has transcended the Tumblr platform and now people are posting videos, photos, memes, and other posts to exhibit their pet’s bad behavior. I think this is a phenomena that is here to stay!

I first stumbled across this Art History Snapchat phenomenon a few months ago on Facebook when I found this Buzzfeed article posted on a friend’s wall: http://www.buzzfeed.com/kmallikarjuna/art-history-snapchats-that-will-give-you-life#.mgyy78LjV. Since then, I’ve seen a number of variations (articles with different artworks) on Buzzfeed as well as other social media platforms, including Instagram. According to Buzzfeed, this trend was spearheaded by Tumblr user Lyxdelsic and has since picked up steam with social media sharing. The phenomenon itself is simple: one photographs a work of art (preferably a famous one from the medieval times) on Snapchat and adds an inappropriate, yet fitting caption. 

This internet phenomenon evokes some of the ideas that we have discussed in class, most notably the “death of the author” and some important net art principles. In its natural setting (a museum), a piece of art takes on a more serious persona which is recognized and respected by museum goers. The artist created this artwork with intent and sought to convey a certain message. However, when an art piece is inserted into a new context, the playful medium of Snapchat in this case, the meaning and thoughts surrounding the artwork change. The viewer actively engages with the artwork and takes full ownership of this shift in meaning, thus signaling the “death of the author.” In addition, this phenomenon brings to light some of the other net art principles that we have explored: viewer participation and appropriation. For such a phenomenon to exist, there must be active participation on the audience’s end. Furthermore, by reappropriating these artworks, the viewer is borrowing from the physical world for digital purposes.

The Tale of Jenny

I had forgotten about this story that blew up Reddit’s servers when it came out until just recently, but anyone that has not read through it should take the time to do so. Three long-winded Reddit posts (long-since deleted, but screenshots are still up on imgur) detail the story of the end to two brothers’ marriages. Taken at face-value, in summary form, the story is not incredibly exciting, as we have all likely seen similar stories in movies, etc. However, watching the emotional state of this man change as he provides real-time updates to his situation gives an incredible insight into an experience that many people have struggled with, but may otherwise have difficulty explaining to others. It’s fascinating to watch this man defend his story, which many have dismissed as fake, and provide his own self-conscious commentary. Real or fake, this aspect of the story is what makes it so riveting. The post is very genuine—as a third party observer we clearly see the mistakes and insecurities of the women in the story, but on a closer l

ook the flaws of the story’s hero show through his seemingly confident (occasionally bragging about his wealth and physical attributes) facade. It was really a fascinating read.

Perhaps almost as interesting as the story itself is its response. A quick Google search of “Jenny Reddit” reveals links to Fox News coverage of the story, hundreds of memes, and, my personal favorite, a series of animated videos portraying the first few segments of the story. Redditors fiercely defend their views as to the authenticity of the story, complaining about inconsistencies, spelling errors, and the like. I desperately want the story to be real, because although I too find this man irritating, his tale inadvertently reminds us that everyone is human. True, Jenny and sister-in-law Carly made a colossal, marriage-ending mistake and lied about it, but the man and his brother also followed and filmed these women without their consent and then immediately divorced their respectively spouses upon the initial discovery that their significant others cheated (and not to mention posted all of it online, and then hinted that they wished to make a profit from selling the story). There was no real discussion or openness between any of the parties involved, demonstrating that all four main characters are irrational and self-centered beings with their own issues, something with which anyone can identify. It also leaves the reader really wanting a final update.

Most of us on the Internet are familiar with fan fiction, in which fans of a book, television show, movie, or other source of popular entertainment draft new stories using characters from the original works. Earlier this quarter a few friends introduced me to Drapple, a fictional pairing in the Harry Potter universe of the character Draco Malfoy and a green Granny Smith apple. At first I thought the concept was only a joke created by a particularly creative Potter fan with an affinity for human-fruit relationships. I was therefore surprised to discover that Drapple has a decently sized fan following on the Internet; a simple Google search will turn up plenty of graphic fan fictions, illustrations, and forum discussions (such as analyses of the two movie scenes in which Draco is seen holding the apple) on the shipping.

Looking back now, it’s actually not that shocking that a phenomenon like Drapple has received a lot of positive support on the Internet. For one, the immense scale and reach of the web allows anyone with a unique idea to be heard and supported by others who share similar views. The digital nature of the web also easily lends itself to the rapid distribution of new ideas among different circles and networks. This aspect of the Internet certainly helped with spreading Drapple, especially on Tumblr, where the pairing may have first originated. And for users like myself who are not particularly interested in reading about extremely descriptive sexual encounters between a teenage boy and his fruit, we can still redirect our attention to the millions of other works found online. For those who are interested in Drapple, though, the Internet is the perfect location for reading about, discussing, and contributing to this phenomenon.

The internet phenomenon that I chose and that I think is relatively unknown is the story of Kyle Macdonald and “one red paperclip.”  I had never heard about this story and was doing some research when I came across it and thought that it was fascinating. The story is about a guy, Kyle, who was inspired by the childhood game, “Bigger, Better,” and through a series of trades online was able to go from having a single red paperclip to a two story house.  Kyle didn’t have a job or any money but he wanted a house, so through 14+ trades thats what he got.  The timeline for his transactions is as follows: 

July 14, 2005: he went to Vancouver and traded the paperclip for a fish-shaped pen.

He then traded the pen the same day for a hand-sculpted doorknob from Seattle, Washington. 

July 25, 2005, he travelled to Amherst, Massachusetts,with a friend to trade the doorknob for a Coleman camp stove (with fuel).

September 24, 2005, he went to California, and traded the camp stove for a Honda generator.

November 16, 2005, he made a second (and successful) attempt (after having the generator confiscated by the New York City Fire Department) in Maspeth, Queens, to trade the generator for an “instant party”: an empty keg, an IOU for filling the keg with the beer of the holder’s choice, and a neon Budweiser sign. 

December 8, 2005, he traded the “instant party” to Quebec comedian and radio  personality Michel Barrette for one Ski-doo snowmobile. 

Within a week of that, he traded the snowmobile for a two-person trip to Yahk, British Columbia in February 2006.

January 7, 2006, he traded the second spot on the Yahk trip for a cube van. 

February 22, 2006, he traded the cube van for a recording contract with Metalworks in Mississauga, Ontario. 

April 11, 2006, he traded the recording contract to Jody Gnant for a year’s rent in Phoenix, Arizona.

April 26, 2006, he traded the one year’s rent in Phoenix, Arizona, for one afternoon with Alice Cooper 

 May 26, 2006, he traded the one afternoon with Alice Cooper for a KISS motorized snow globe. 

June 2, 2006, he traded the KISS motorized snow globe to Corbin Bernsen for a role in the film Donna on Demand.

July 5, 2006, he traded the movie role for a two-story farmhouse in Kipling, Saskatchewan. 

At the time, Kyle was a blogger and was documenting these transactions online for the world to see.  His blog has over 10 million views since first posting in July 2005.  Kyle’s story was such a success and became so popular that he wrote a book about it.  

While this whole story is really fascinating to me, when you review all of Kyle’s transactions, some of them are a little questionable. It is clear that as his journey became more and more popular on the internet and in the press, some of his trades might have just been from people supporting his journey instead of actually trading with him.  For example, I am not sure how you could trade a recording contract with Metalworks for a year’s rent in Phoenix, Arizona. None the less, his story is fascinating and one that I had never heard of before researching.
