Understanding the Differences Between Class 5 and Class 7 Licenses in Canada
Content: Canada’s driver licensing system uses different classes to define what vehicles you can operate. Two of the most common for passenger vehicles are Class 5 and Class 7—especially in provinces like Alberta and British Columbia.
A Class 7 license is the learner’s license. It allows you to drive with restrictions such as a supervising driver, no alcohol in your system, and limits on driving hours. After gaining experience and passing the road test, you upgrade to a Class 5 license, which gives you full driving privileges.
Knowing the difference helps new drivers navigate the GDL (Graduated Driver Licensing) process and progress safely.
