Hello! I've been feeling a calling (?) lately of AA Raphael and I'm not sure how to start, specially since I left Christianity a while ago and do not believe in the christian G-d

Hello Anon! Thanks so much for the ask :)

I understand your position. For myself as an angel worker, I don't interact with the Christian God or consider him a "requirement" to angel work. As an Omnist, I do believe in his existence. I was also confirmed in the Catholic church when I was a teenager. But my religious practice is paganism and spiritwork, thus why I choose not to interact with the Christian god.

I've since moved away from trying to figure out my idea of where angels come from is because there are many potential explanations. They are present across different religions and beliefs, and may be called different names as well. What I do know is that angels are spirits that are present, responsive, wanting to help, and my interactions with them have not changed as I've figured out my religious beliefs.

This is my old post on devotional acts for Raphael if you want some ideas.

You can also start by widely researching Raphael. I know that a lot of information will be intertwined with Christian and adjacent religion, though you may be surprised by what you do resonate with. Take regular breaks if it's not something that you can easily do.

The #1 thing you can do to start working with angels is simply writing/reciting a prayer to them and inviting them into your life. A prayer doesn't have to mean worship. It can simply be communication. Something like "Archangel Raphael, Archangel of Healing, I invite you into my space and life." is fine. You can also write something more. I'm not sure what your background is but if you have any previous prayer writing experience such as in polytheism, you can transfer those skills too.

You can write down what you like about Raphael or what draws you to him. Perhaps what you want to go to him for help with. Angels are some of the most unconditionally loving spirits you can ever come across. They have their own personalities, yes, but they are here and happy to help us - so don't be afraid to just ask him for help on things. You won't be bothering him and he won't expect anything in return (except for standard respect and politeness).

A lot of my work with Raphael is based on my work as a healer! So I call on him for assistance when doing healing work or learning about different healing modalities. It may be the same or different for you.

Classical Angel Magic Starterpack

Angel Altar Inspiration

Here's a look at my angel altar which I use as a space of dedication and work with the archangels. Keep reading for a closer look!

On the right, I have crystals related to my sun archangel Haniel being rose quartz, clear quartz, selenite and moonstone. I also have a decorative plastic box with plastic pearls inside because it's pretty.

Additionally, I have a candle to light when doing prayers and work with the angels, and a small angel statue as a point of focus.

Finally, I have a prayer bag dedicated to Haniel. It has rice with essential oils corresponding to Haniel's qualities as well as herbs in the same nature. I can use this bag when praying to the archangel.

On the other side, I have these small jars with pink flowers, pink salt and crushed eggshells. One reason is because they're pretty and match the aesthetic but also to draw in more qualities of archangel Haniel and for protection. The malachite is there to help draw in abundance and prosperity.

In the case of giving liquid offerings, I have the cup there ready. I also got a taller plastic cup to use a vase for fake flowers as an offering as well.

I will probably make a separate post about some of the things in my altar like the oil you may see in the bottle near the back, and also the prayer bag. Hope this may inspire your angel altar to welcome the angels into your life and begin work with them!

I am a devotee of Hekate and a huge fan of Hermes (my first deity <3). I also keep the archangels in my heart and tend to statues and devotionals of them.

Angel Work - Religious or Secular?

Hello to any practitioners that this post may reach.

Through an ask I received a bit ago and from what I've seen, there are many people who avoid angel work because of angel's connections to religion. And I don't blame you if you think that way because I had a similar experience before I got into angel work.

As mentioned, I'm a practitioner of the Pauline Art or Classical Angel Magic. This means that this post will be from that point of view and if your belief is different, then that is completely fine! This post is just here to go over what the beliefs are under the tradition but it doesn't mean you have to strictly hold to them (because I sure don't). Long post ahead so...

tl;dr: angel work may involve acknowledging a divine creator also known as the universe and what it's made of, but worship isn't mandatory and we don't need to be religious towards anything to work with angels.

In my starterpack post, I went over what the Pauline Art offers as a tradition and practice. Here I will be going a little deeper, specifically who or what the "creator" is of this belief.

Now you may read that angelic magic isn't really a belief and that the magic will work no matter what because it is how it is. You believing or not does not change the fact that it works (this is not the same as your intention being put into a ritual). This means that you don't need to follow anything I say or that you read as if it is a religion, because it's not. It's just a magickal practice that you can incorporate religious and spiritual beliefs into.

In angelic tradition, there is only one "god", or universal creator. They then divided their powers between the Archangels, Angels and Lesser Angels. Our solar system also has an archangel appointed to each planet.

The archangels (planetary angels, teaching angels) are here to teach us and to help us spiritually evolve. The practice is also under the belief that everything is connected and has part of the divine in it. The planets are connected to the divine, as well as nature and even yourself.

This tradition also holds the belief that we go through reincarnation in order to evolve spiritually, mentally and physically. In each life, we are assigned two angels which are a sun angel and moon angel. You can find out who these angels are based on your astrological signs but I can go into that in another post.

With these angels, we develop ourselves under their domains in each lifetime. Perhaps what your sun and moon angel represent is what you need to focus on in this lifetime. Although it is noted that we have freewill. You have the choice to follow this path in order to explore what you may need to spiritually know, or you can build your own path.

As the cycle goes, it is said that with enough evolution, we can achieve angelhood ourselves by becoming one with the 'creator' or 'source' again, to be reborn as an angel and therefore teach others who are yet to evolve fully.

Here's a tidbit from a website I will link in the references:

The Pauline Art, named after St Paul, who saw 'a blinding light of truth or the light of the Angels’ and who later in life found confirmation of it among the religious practices of the Simeonites and Essenes. What he found was this: "That the ritual of Invocation of the Angels of the Day and Night and the Zodiacal degrees, was called 'The Magic of the Angels of Man' a system of astrological magic similar to the method of Enochian Tables as used by Dr Dee and Edward Kelly, but far less complex.

Anyway, it may seem daunting that this practice has yet ANOTHER almighty god up there in the sky that governs everything. Sounds a bit like Christianity doesn't it? Well, the difference lies in the fact that we do not worship the creator of the universe or Source. It is just there and we are part of it. I mean, in a sense you can worship it by loving yourself but you know.

We don't have to fear the divine universe, and we do not need to 'serve' it. In this instance, it is here to teach us and give us quality of life by working through ourselves and enhancing different aspects (for example, Archangel Haniel may be an angel of yours and maybe that means you need more love in your life whether that's for yourself, or to improve how you love others).

It doesn't have to take over your life, there are practices you can take up that aren't complex. I can make a post on that too some day. Angel work doesn't need to be religious because we don't need to worship anything. We can thank the universe for what it gives us, we can honour the angels with offerings and love, but we do not need to unconditionally and blindly follow anyone to work with the angels.

I am an angel magic practitioner who acknowledges that there is divinity out there and a lot of things I love such as nature is made of this divinity. The people I love in my life also hold a bit of divinity. I also hold the divine in me. Yet, I do also acknowledge the pagan gods of the old religions. It's a big of an agnostic + animistic + polytheistic mess but it's how I wanna vibe when it comes to spiritual and religious belief.
