One of the things that has come out of my deep anger and sorrow over the story TROS decided to tell is that 2020 is going to be the year I write the story I want to read.
And Classical Fantasy (as it will be called for the moment) is starting to take shape in my mind. I’ve got lots and lots of world building to do before I even start to write but for once I’m not feeling daunted by world building because classical epic and history are worlds I feel comfortable inhabiting already. And because it’s not history but rather fantasy inspired worlds, I have a pass saying that I can do what I like.
The basic premise is a cold war situation between Fantasy!Sparta and Fantasy!Athens one generation after a terrible war between them. The two states are mirrors and opposites of each other and my two ultimate protagonists, one from each, will be equally mirrors and opposites of each other. Both states have developed into what they are based on their remembrances and mythologising of The Great War of Heroes that took place many centuries ago, a war between great, larger than life figures with magical powers against a foreign power. After it ended, Fantasy!Greece ended up riven with divisions and split up into factions who each remembered the War of Heroes differently and took different messages from it. And as they grew further apart, tensions erupted until they broke out into war amongst themselves.
Now there is a tentative peace and civilisation (or what they call civilisation, based as it is on the subjugation of women, slavery and elitism) is flourishing in Fantasy!Athens and particularly in the neutral state of wisdom and learning, Fantasy!Alexandria, but in Fantasy!Sparta, a state that depends on heroic values and warfare, peacetime is harder to adjust to.
Anyway, I’m working hard on establishing my city states and cultures and starting to figure out characters. Cassia, my heroine from Fantasy!Sparta, is starting to take shape. Her counterpart from Fantasy!Athens is currently nameless and only faint and hazy at the moment.
Anyway, does anyone know a good system of keeping notes for world building because I think I’m going to need to start writing stuff down?
And if anyone wants to cheer me on, that would be amazing! This is going to be a MASSIVE project but I really want to do it!
