[Content Warnings: mentions of rape, sexual assault, spousal abuse, the traumatic events of warfare against civilians] Finally, as promised, here is the first installment of my translation of  אֵיכָה Eichah / the Book of Lamentations.

The background of this poetic work is the sack of Jerusalem and the exile of the vast majority of the elite class of Judean society by the Babylonians in ~586 BCE.

The Lamenter (whoever authored the poem) uses a personification of Jerusalem – Daughter Zion – to  depict the violence and violation of the Babylonian assault. This imagery is troubling, reminding perhaps of the use of rape and non-consensual sexual advances in modern media to depict female characters as helpless, and to make villains egregiously villainous (while at the same time ignoring acts such as these that occur to real women).

The majority of this chapter is told through the voice of a narrator, describing the awful state of Daughter Zion, and judging her – this is all her fault, isn't it? Because she was unfaithful to Gd and took many lovers?

But Daughter Zion herself begins to speak, interrupting the narrator, and eventually seeming to bring the narrator around to her side. Is it her fault? Is this punishment not excessive for her crimes?

This thesis is not yet the primary focus of the poem, but appears here almost hesitatingly, fearfully. And if Gd is to blame, who can blame Daughter Zion for being hesitant and fearful? The depiction of the LORD here (and then moreso in chapter 2) as angry and physically violent is striking – and terrifying, especially for those who have experienced abuse at the hands of their partners.
