Movie no. 47: #365classicmoviechallenge the next film was the 1938 drama “The Shopworn Angel” starring Margaret Sullavan, James Stewart, Walter Pidgeon & Hattie McDaniel 😊 This is the 2nd film that Jimmy & Margaret did together after the success of their first film “Next Time We Love” 2 years prior a film that got Jimmy noticed in Hollywood by this time both of their careers were on the rise. Jimmy previously had supporting roles in films such as Wife vs. Secretary, The Gorgeous Hussy & After The Thin Man & early starring roles in Born To Dance & Vivacious Lady. Sullavan was already a big star in films such as The Moon’s Our Home & Three Comrades. The two were best friends in real life and she was the one that helped made Stewart a star in the early days of his career they would star in two more films together with the underrated Christmas classic “The Shop Around The Corner” and the war-drama “The Mortal Storm” both in 1940. 😊 The film underwent changes from the start from the storyline to the choice of directors and actors. The part of Daisy was supposed to go to Jean Harlow but she passed away before filming began so it was offered to Joan Crawford but she rejected the role so it was then passed over to Rosalind Russell before finally giving it to Sullavan who just signed to MGM at the time. Melvyn Douglas was originally cast to play Sam but that role went to Pidgeon. The film had two other versions before this as a silent film in 1919 & a early talkie film in 1928 that starred Gary Cooper & Nancy Carroll (which garnered her an Oscar nomination). The film’s screenplay had to be altered at the time due to the production code which meant all the explicit parts of the story had to be cut and that Daisy’s profession had to be changed from a hard-edged Chorus Girl into a famous musical star and Sam’s character as a gangster into a rich high society boyfriend.
