Secondhand clothing is a great way to save money, make eco-friendly choices, and also find high-quality or unique pieces to enhance your wardrobe. Whether you are shopping on Close5 or digging through a thrift store, these tips will make buying pre-loved items for your wardrobe easy.
Know your brands
Sometimes the asking price may seem a little high, but if you’re brand-savvy you’ll more readily recognize which items are worth the cost. Higher-quality used items from designers and high-end stores can fetch better prices, and familiarity with these brands can save you from overspending.
Measurements over size
Sizes can vary wildly across brands so be sure to ask the seller for measurements of the item. Bear in mind many garments are measured lying flat, so that number should be doubled for the actual measurement: A waist measured at 14 inches across is actually a 28-inch waist. Ask for total length, inseam length, waist, and bust measurements to be sure it will fit.
Know what suits you
When you can’t try the clothing on, make sure to stick to cuts, styles and colors that suit you well. It can be tempting to buy an item because it’s a great deal, but it may be disappointing when it doesn’t suit you. Since all sales are final, it’s a good idea to go with what you know.
Has it been cleaned?
Be sure to ask the seller if the item has been recently cleaned. Minor marks such as deodorant marks or dust usually come out with a simple wash and is a good indication that the item hasn’t been laundered. However, if the seller says the item has been cleaned and you still see marks, these are likely stains that won’t easily come out.
Ask about pets & smokers
Ask the seller if there are smokers or pets in the home that might cause odors or result in pet hair on the garment – particularly if you’re allergic. You can also do a quick smell test upon inspection of the item.
Consider a little TLC
If you’re good with some needle & thread, or have a trusted tailor, you can save a bundle. Don’t let missing buttons, ripped seams, or clothing that needs minor alterations scare you off. These are usually easy & inexpensive fixes that turn that deal into an amazing find! And don’t forget, shoes can be resoled, reconditioned, or even stretched in some cases.
