It might be spring break, but I keep thinking back to a book speed dating activity my AP classes did the day before break started. AP Language and Composition life is very structured and formal with analysis and rhetoric, so I used this speed dating time as a way to reintroduce my students to choice in their reading selections. It was loud and slightly chaotic, but it was worth it to see many of them find a book they truly WANTED to read. Time well spent.

Ren's been dealing with this reincarnation nonsense for YEARS. Woke up with fangs, a tail, and all the spicy Bakugo memories intact. The trauma? Unchecked. The rage? Simmering. And now, after 15 peaceful(ish) years of no UA alumni sightings, guess who struts into his Hero History class like it’s a goddamn sitcom entrance? Ochako 'Round Face' Uraraka.

Bruh. The way Ren’s tail twitched on SIGHT. She’s all cheerful, teaching about Pro Hero dynamics like she didn’t fight this man in a tournament once. Meanwhile, Haruto? Bestie is fangirling like Deku unlocked new DLC. Full sparkles, note-taking at 100% capacity. The audacity. And she has NO IDEA why Ren’s one internal monologue away from combusting.

10/10 classroom drama, someone get this man a coping mechanism. 📚🔥🐾

So.

I have a story.

For context, I'm a teacher in Thailand.

Well, today, one of my students went to get something from his locker. After he left, the girls started fussing at him, so he went back too look in it again. I went over to see what they were doing.

And then a chingchok lizard fell out on the boy's head.

The boy (who is very much a boy's boy) makes the most high pitched scream, slaps the lizard off, and fucking bolts.

People are scared of lizards in Thailand, so all the girls started screaming, jumping on their chairs and running off to the front of the classroom. For context, most chingchoks are half the size of your hand. It wasn't going to terrorise them.

AND THEN.

One of the girls was like, '🤔. This lizard looks pokeable"

Now, if you've never met a chingchok, they are one of the lizards that can shed their tails. So the kid comes over, reaches down, and pokes the lizard's tail. Of course, it sheds its tail, which kinda just flops around. More chaos of kids screaming and one girl legitimately bursting into tears ensues. I sort of… shoo the lizard away, it shoos, and I get the kids to sit down.

Then I decided the tail was indeed kinda disgusting and was like 🤔, someone should really clean this up. Well, Girl that Poked the Lizard, this is your fault, so you can clean up the mess.

So she did.

But what a class.

I spent last year subbing and tutoring. I'll still do it next year if I can't find anything, but I just want my own classroom so badly. I've gotten resentful of the teachers whose classrooms I sub in... I really dislike subbing. But I do it because it's supposed to help me get a job. So far, no good.
