Divorce. It had always been a dirty hurtful word to Rennyn, especially since he had seen his own parents go through it and even more so now that he had just been through one himself. He remembered how he had felt as a little boy, the endless nights lying in bed wondering what he could have done differently to allow his parents to stay together; it was as if all those same raw helpless feelings had never gone away but had been waiting just below the surface of his heart, waiting for the old wound to be reopened so all the familiar feelings of hopelessness and self-loathing could return but this time they returned tenfold because now he was the adult it was happening to and not the little boy.
This time it was different because he had thought she was the love of his life and that they were going to spend the rest of their lives together in blissful happiness but it wasn’t to be. Rennyn, although highly successful and one of the richest men in the country, had never enjoyed the jet setting social spotlight many in his class obviously did. Rennyn was a quiet home body. Given the opportunity he would prefer being a recluse rather than the household name his success had given him. But his wife of only two years had thrived on being the social butterfly and craved the high society nightlife. This separation in preferences was what ultimately began tearing them apart and soon ended their marriage.
After the finalization of the divorce, Rennyn delved into his work in an attempt to hide his pain and give himself an escape but it hadn’t worked as his depression continued, causing several of his close friends to become quite concerned over his wellbeing. After much begging and pleading by them, he finally agreed to take some time off and travel. His first destination was a tiny island off the coast of South Carolina, Kiawah Island, that had a semi private golf course that he really enjoyed. Rennyn liked it because the staff was entirely locals and extremely well-mannered and friendly. He packed a bag for several weeks’ travels, made his reservations for the penthouse in the hotel there and called his driver to take him to the small airport so he could fly himself out.
After arriving at the airstrip several miles from the main part of the island, he rented a little sports car and drove himself to the hotel and waited patiently at the front desk to check in.
