Lost and Found
Rennyn followed the woman down the street, making sure to keep a safe distance so he wouldn’t be noticed by her or anyone else as a stalker or threat. He thought she looked vaguely familiar the first time he had seen her a few days ago but then after seeing her twice more that week, he knew he knew her, he was sure of it, but from where?
He had been living in his own personal nightmare since waking in the hospital months ago, not knowing who he was or where he lived or even if he had any family anywhere. He had been found almost a year ago shot and dumped on the side of a very secluded road with no identification and barely clinging to life. The doctors all thought he would regain his memory before being released but that hadn’t happened, nor had anyone come forward to help identify him so, after his release from the hospital, he managed to get a job with the help of the social worker assigned to his case and had saved enough money until he had enough to leave and start a new life in a new town. That was how he came to be where he was now. His case worker in Carsonville had told him to let her know where he wound up so she could set him up with another counselor that could assist in his efforts to settle there with a new identity. His name was no longer Rennyn Dunmer but Dante Walker. Once that had happened, he began to explore the new city and that was when he had spotted the woman.
As she began to walk a little faster, he found he couldn’t because of the group of tourists walking between him and her. When they stopped, he was unable to get past them before the light changed, allowing her to cross the street while he was still stuck at the crosswalk. All he could do was watch helplessly as she disappeared from view while he waited for the light to change.
“Damn.” He whispered.
As soon as the light changed, he rushed across, stepping back onto the sidewalk just in time to see her enter a building almost a full block away. He broke into a run, barely missing an elderly woman and her dog, ushering a hurried “Sorry ma’am!” as he pushed past. He entered the building and stopped because once again he had lost sight of her. The people there continued on as if he weren’t there, which gave him the chance to look a little closer without worrying about being asked to leave.
He spotted her near the elevator and started to go in that direction but he couldn’t get through the crowd fast enough to catch her before losing sight of her again. He looked around for almost a full minute then decided to give up and turned to leave.
(If you want to that is. I know it’s been forever.)
He listened to her explaining everything and wondered what he had Travis could have been talking about in the park because he knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that he had met the man there more than once. "Is he still alive? I know you most likely don't give a damn but I was just curious."
