I am for an art that is political-erotical-mystical, that does something more than sit on its ass in a museum. I am for an art that takes its form from the lines of life itself, that twists and extends and accumulates and spits and drips, and is heavy and coarse and blunt and sweet and stupid as life itself. Painting, especially much better than words, allows oneself to express the various stages of thought, including the deeper levels, the underground stages of the mental process. If I didn’t think what I was doing had something to do with enlarging the boundaries of art, I wouldn’t go on doing it. “Everything I do is completely original-I made it up when I was a kid.” I am for an art that grows up not knowing it is art at all. I am for an artist who vanishes. Claes Oldenburg, born in Stockholm, Sweden on Jan 28, 1929 #clausoldenburg Lumonics is a performance space, gallery, sculpture studio, and art school based in Denver. Soft Sculpture Inspiration
Here are a few images of artists who create art using soft materials, often stuffed, that are sewn with a sewing machine or by hand, sometimes incorporating wrapping.
Soft sculptures can be constructed and stuffed from flat sheets of fabric or other soft materials to create pillow like form structures. Soft sculpture also lends itself well to incorporating a range of other materials with soft components and can be a great strategy to use in conjunction with found objects.
Soft Sculptures can be any scale, made for the wall, to hang or be freestanding. Artists working in soft sculpture develop their own strategies for structure utilizing armatures and interior supports as the scale and weight of projects dictate.
Generally, soft sculpture projects involve making samples to test out form, structure, and materials in a smaller scales before moving on to larger more ambitious final versions. Ideas for soft sculpture projects can be worked out using cut and taped paper or cardboard, so you tangibly work out how to create form and structure from planar materials.
