“You Messed Up My Mind” -- CLAY HAMMOND
Hammond does his best Sam Cooke impersonation as he draws out the first two words of the lyric: “Youuuuuuuuuuuuu’ve ga-ah-ah-ah-ahhhhht...so-oh many guys.” But as the song progresses, with horns and organ filling out the initially sparse piano, drums and guitar backing, Hammond drops any pretense of being suave and collected, and simply succumbs to his devastation. In the process, he delivers one of my all time favorite soul vocals.
He claims his time is too precious to waste, but there’s nothing in the way he sings those lines to suggest he has the willpower to move on.

“Love Made the Whole World Multiply” – CLAY HAMMOND
Like most great pop songs, “love” in this context means fucking, which Clay Hammond makes clear by moving from the image of a new-born baby to the simple statement, “None of us got here on a Greyhound/we all got here the same old way.”
Yup, our parents had sex. Clay Hammond has one of the few voices on the planet that can make this fact sound like something sweet and good.

At some point, you have to choose between life and fiction. The two are very close, but they never actually touch.
