hanahaki glitch
‘It has come to my attention that although A.I’s are only an imitation of the human mind, they can exceed their boundaries and learn how to feel, even love.
Unfortunately, this will break a portion of their code. It will start corroding pieces of their filesystems until it can overtake their entire program. A.I’s have reported to see phantom binaries they identify as flowers and petals, each with different species everytime. Because of these unnecessary data, it increases their cache and overload their working RAM in an alarming speed, and it won’t be long before they will shut down– or be decommissioned for that matter. Unless certain treatment is done to their code, they are most likely unable to recover from a permanent program failure.
If the A.I has a body, they are the unlucky ones. Recently, I have performed an autopsy of sorts on a robot from California, whose code has been thoroughly destroyed from the aforementioned symptoms above. The most unusual thing I have noted was that the body the A.I was housed in was overgrown with flowers. I suspect that because the alloyed body is much more hollow than a human’s, the flora has more opportunities to grow from the CPU inside to out, even piercing through the synthetic skin if it was not that thick or dense. The staff doesn’t know how the seeds had gotten there or why.
I interviewed the staff in charge of the robot. When the roboticists had first discovered the body, they said they had found them slumped over a desk, in the middle of writing an incomplete letter left unadressed as they were overgrowned and adorned by many forget-me-nots. As for the letter itself, it spoke of cherished memories, and also sorrow. A hint of affection was found for the recipient, and also a promise to meet them again with an important confession to make, but as to what that secret was, will perhaps only stay as a secret.
One of the janitors working the late night shifts had confessed that he had been cleaning up trails of petals after them, but promised the A.I not to tell the others after being begged not to. And finally, a teary-eyed intern has approached me about the newly corrupted being. Apparently, they were the robot’s closest acquaintance; ‘best friend’, as the other would like to call it. They had known all along the A.I has contracted this mysterious malware. The intern lamented how the malfuction will increase harshly for the other whenever they were both within the same vicinity; although this was not the case before. Thinking themselves to be a dangerous catalyst for a violent reaction, they decided to isolate themselves from the robot. As you can see, this lead to a whole slew of regrets for the worker, as they weren’t able to see the android before its coding fell apart. To this day, I still can’t quite figure out if the intern did have anything to do with amplifying the effects of the symptoms.
And to my conclusion with this short documentation, as I look back to everything I had witnessed and noted down, I remembered an old fantasy tale. They say that if a being were to bestow upon themselves a one-sided love for another, they shall grow an abundant garden of flowers deep in their chests, coughing up petals until their love is returned. Surgically removing this disease will guarantee survival, but the same is not said for their feelings for the person forever. If they have decided to clutch onto this unreciprocated love, they shall die from suffocation from the ever-growing plants lodged in their bodies.
Inspired by this flowery made up disease, I shall call this self-made and destructive anomaly in the world of technology, the Hanahaki Glitch.’
