Another branch off of the materials research I’ve been doing leads down toward self-glazing clays. Here are the results of preliminary proof of concept formulation. . Oh, and did I mention that it’s not thixotropic like the traditional self-glazing/Egyptian paste/faience formulations, so forming it isn’t as difficult? This also makes it more suited to extrusion for 3D printing than traditional formulations. . These samples were fired to cone 04. I’ve got some fine tuning to do as well as some colorant tests, but I’m excited for the possibilities. . Torch test of DIY soft-brick sample. . I had hoped to try and fire the mini-kiln I pit fired, but I came down with a stomach bug that put me out of commission for a couple days. But, I did also pit fire a couple of “structural refractory” tests. . This is a mixture of slip and coffee grounds and it looks very promising. The main drawback that I’ve encountered in this sample is the amount of shrinkage during drying. But, I think I have some ideas on how to counter that and on ways to use it that mitigate the shrinkage rate. .
