Το ρόδι, ένα συμβολικό πάντρεμα ζωής και θανάτου, μας ήρθε από την Μεσοποταμία το 4000π.Χ. Γνωστό στους Ρωμαίους ως «Μήλο της Καρχηδόνας», το μυστηριώδες αυτό φρούτο - ξερό απ' έξω και ζουμερό από μέσα - ταξίδεψε στη Δύση με τους Άραβες, ενώ οι Ισπανοί το διέδωσαν στην Αμερική. Μυθολογικά, το συναντάμε στο χέρι της Ήρας, της προστάτιδας του γάμου και της ευγονίας. Το ρόδι φτάνει μέχρι και τον κάτω κόσμο στον μύθο της Περσεφόνης, αφού είναι ο καρπός που της δίνει ο Πλούτωνας για να την δέσει με τον Άδη. Η Αφροδίτη, με τη σειρά της, το φυτεύει στον ιερό της κήπο στην Κύπρο, συνδέοντας το ρόδι μια για πάντα με τη γαμήλια ευτυχία, το ερωτικό πάθος και την αφθονία, χάρη στα άπλετα κόκκινα σπόρια του! Δεν είναι τυχαίο που οι Κινέζοι το χαρίζουν σε μορφή κεραμικού στους γάμους, εμείς το σπάμε στο κατώφλι της Πρωτοχρονιά και οι Βεδουίνοι το σπάζουν στην σκηνή των νεόνυμφων. Το δικό μας ρόδι είναι μια Πρωτοχρονιάτικη ευχή για αναγέννηση και αφθονία, ένα θαυμάσιο σύμβολο καλοτυχίας, γονιμότητας και ευημερίας. Καλά Χριστούγεννα και ευτυχισμένο το νέο έτος!
