Backstory
Ethan Bennett grew up to a pretty well off lifestyle with his father being a police officer to the GCPD and his mother being a well known paramedic, Ethan was brought up to have a pretty strong sense of justice and looked up to both his parents while his older brother, Jack Bennett, resented his parents, particularly his father, and became involved with a few gangs in Gotham. After graduating high school Ethan knew exactly what he wanted to do with his life, become a police officer for the GCPD like his dad but shortly after deciding this his father was killed while protecting Roland Daggett from Mud Face and his brother was kidnapped by an unknown group (the group was later identified as the cult known as Church of St Dumas). His mother prevented Ethan from continuing his training into becoming a police officer but Ethan’s drive to protect people was only further ignited by all this and he managed to convince his mother to let him become a firefighter.
During his time there he befriended an odd man by the name of Garfield Lynns and slowly became very well known throughout Gotham for his heroic acts which included saving a group of orphans, rescuing numerous cats from trees and extinguishing many fires. His career as a firefighter was brought to end when he was caught in an explosion from a chemical fire that started in Daggett Industries (later authorities discovered that the fire had been started by Garfield Lynns), they could not locate Ethan’s body and so he was pronounced dead at the scene. Unknown to everyone Ethan had survived due to the chemicals transforming his body in a clay-like substance, similar to how Basilo was but much smaller.
Ethan decided that instead of feeling sorry for himself he would rather take to the streets and continue to protect the citizens as a brand new vigilante, his appearance and method of taking down criminals originally confused people and made them think that he was Mud Face but, with Basil still confined within Arkham at the time, the press, GCPD and Batman confirmed that this person was not Basilo. The press decided to give him the name Claything, though Ethan wasn’t really fond of his new name he continued to fight crime alongside the Batman.
When Sondra Fuller broke Basilo out of Arkham Asylum and kidnapped DEO agent Matt Hagen, Claything was the first person to track the group down to their boat and interrupt their attempt to escape with the agent. What happen during that interaction is not known to a lot of people but it led to the creation of the Clayface.
