Our Olympic Year
I was going to write an article on the Gay Olympics because they’re coming to Cleveland in 2014. (I couldn’t believe we beat out both Milaukee and Detroit!) But my editor was worried I’d make foolish comments about the hot dog eating contest, the pole sitting marathon, and whether they’d test the athletes for gayness to be sure there were no impostors. My editor said: “Don’t make fun of gays– they’re organized, they have resources, and they’ll get you.”
I was pretty dismayed at his lack of confidence in my tact and discretion. Moreover, I thought, “If you can’t make fun of gays, what minority is there left to bully?” But A-ha! There’s always poor people. Everyone hates poor people– even poor people themselves. Plus, they have no voice, no organization, no resources– the perfect subject matter for humor.
So with no further ado I present my modest proposal for The Housing Project Olympics– the events along with their corporate sponsors:
—– “The Price Is Right” presented by Family Dollar: Guess the price of detergent, underwear, canned goods, etc., without going over the surprisingly low mark-up on surprisingly obscure brands.
—– “The Shoplifter’s Obstacle Course” presented by Dave’s Supermarket: Get past the cameras, the clerks, the guards while nonchalantly having a T-Bone stuffed down your pants.
—– “The Wild Irish Rose Chug-A-Lug” sponsored by Those Foreign Guys Who Run The Corner Store: Who can drink a pint of rotgut the fastest without throwing up? Paper bags mandatory.
—–“Guess The Number” sponsored by The Ohio Lottery Commission: Governor Kasich himself will be on hand to think of a three digit number. If you can guess the number he’s thinking about you win five hundred dollars (before taxes). Of added interest, no one has ever won this event. The governor is that good!
—– “The Electric Wheelchair Race” sponsored by Lutheran Hospital: Ten-K only because endurance counts!
See you in Cleveland in 2014, Our Olympic Year!
