The semester has officially begun.

We had our first and second fire evacuations of the semester today. Last semester I think we had 11 total.

Clement isn't even the freshman dorm, Goodyear is. And Goodyear only had like 2 last semester.

My dorm is currently having its 15th false alarm "fire emergency" this semester. It is snowing and gusting wind outside, so everyone who evacuated my dorm just immediately walked over to the adjoining dorm and went back inside(the dorms are connected by underground tunnels but the fire alarms only set off one building.)

And to think my dorm is the upperclassman and transfer dorm by the adjoining dorm(which never has its alarms set off) is the freshman dorm.

Why are the upperclassmen less competent than the freshmen?

It makes me upset when people think my friends and I don't try without really having spent time with us. 

Yeah, we look like a bunch of rowdy, grungy, burn-outs. And yeah, we stay up way to late, some times we don't sleep for days. And yeah, we like to party, some of us harder than others, and some not so hard. 

But you don't understand the system we have. You don't understand the effort we put into making our lifestyle work. There are some of us with really hard majors, and some with majors that are considered easy. At a University, some considerable effort has to be put in to get a degree in anything. 

What you don't understand is the lengths we go to to make this work. Whether it means busting your ass on homework after classes so your night is free, or pulling an all nighter with your friends and still managing to be productive and get shit done. We have a lovely balance of working and socializing.  We study together, convince each other to not get to distracted, keep each other company, get fucked up, laugh, whatever we feel like doing or whatever needs to be done. 

To make this balance of school and a social life as eventful as ours, we've made plenty of sacrifices. Some of us go a few days with out sleeping, showering, sometimes eating because there isn't time in our schedule we were willing to give up. Some of us have taken way more than the recommended dose of stimulants, not to get high, but to focus and ensure we are awake until the job is done. Some of us see the moon more than we see the sun.  This sounds like a hard lifestyle, but its what we choose. The friends we have here at college are sometimes the only thing around to keep you stable. College can be a lonely and stressful place, but we all assure one another that it doesn't have to be. 

We have sacrificed our bodies, our health, our peace, almost everything we have to do well and be well. The remaining thing I won't sacrifice is my peace of mind, and if this is what keeps me going, then so be it. Don't you dare assume we are all lazy, burnt out, addicted, future drop outs. Some kids are. Some just know how to make it work. 

It might be the wrong way, but its our way.
