Same thing, same episode:
Roy: (to his team) That's a good place to start, although I'm not sure the likes of us would be too welcome there. You might need to get creative.
Glenn: gets creative
Roy: No, not like that!
Like, srsly, who is writing these episodes? It's like it gets worse every week.
You know. I was excited about series 6. I was hoping we'd get some good Roy and Cleo interaction, we'd see how they cope with now raising a broody teenager, we'd see them preparing for the wedding, we'd see some more fallout from the Sandy thing. I've been making movie posters and GIFs every week in anticipation of the next episode.
Out of a 270-ish minutes of 'Grace' we've seen so far in series 6, we literally only had a total of 5 minutes and 50 seconds of interactions between Roy, Cleo and/or Bruno that weren't work related. That's 2.1% of screen time.
Who decided to pretty much eliminate the thing that drives a lot of viewers to tune in every week - namely the personal character stories that keep us invested, that give the series its heart and soul?
Like I said, I was excited about series 6. Now I'm not. I'm mostly fed up. This has been such a letdown. Sure, there's still one episode to come, and I guess the fact that it'll feature the wedding means we get more Roy and Cleo, but by this time I've given up hope that it'll breathe more soul back into these characters.
I'm not the type who only watches TV series for "the ship". In order to truly enjoy something, the whole thing needs to be rounded and a full package of engaging overall story and interesting, 3-dimensional characters. So this is not a "wah, canon neglects my ship" complaint. I don't even consider myself an avid Roy and Cleo shipper, though I do like them as a pairing.
Personally, I think this series has been a string of bad content focus decisions and a tad of bad writing, too. 6x02 was particularly bland - from the criminal case to the writing and the cinematography.
Then again, this may just be me, and maybe it's time for me to move on and stop being invested in wanting to like new episodes of Grace. It'll be interesting to see the ratings for series 6 to gauge overall reception, and then see whether ITV decides to renew.
Did anyone else feel like that scene with Bruno came a little out of the blue? Like maybe there was a scene in the episode earlier that got cut...?
Clearly, Bruno is upset with Roy over something. But what? The last we saw them, Bruno had been suspended from school and Roy was actually quite empathetic and gentle with him rather than giving him the third degree for beating up a kid at school. So where is this sudden resentment coming from? That felt really disjointed to me and now I feel even more cheated, thinking that perhaps we were deprived of a Roy and Bruno scene that ended up on the cutting room floor.
I mean, I get it. These are network television series that need to abide by a fixed number of minutes of screen time that they cannot surpass, and things need to be cut in order to make that work. But assuming that this is what actually happened, could they not have cut some of the criminal case stuff instead? Or if that's not what happened, then that feels like bad scriptwriting to me.
