Exploring the Coastal Magic of Howth, Ireland
On the tenth day of our trip, we set out for one of the most beautiful coastal escapes just outside Dublin—Howth. Tucked away on the northeastern edge of the city, Howth promised sweeping sea views, rugged cliffs, and the kind of serene charm only a seaside village can offer.
After a quick breakfast, we were all geared up and ready for the day. Our journey began with a walk to Booterstown Dart Station, the nearest Dart station from our stay in Stillorgan. The Dart ride itself was an experience—about an hour-long journey that meandered through the vibrant heart of Dublin. As the train rolled past the cityscape, we caught glimpses of bustling streets, cozy neighborhoods, and even the iconic Aviva Stadium, all while feeling the buzz of Dublin fade gently into the calmness of the coast.
Upon reaching Howth station, we hopped on a double-decker bus to get closer to the clifftop trails. However, in our excitement, we overshot our stop by a kilometre! That meant a bit of a walk back to the drop point—but honestly, even that short walk was a treat, with fresh sea breeze in the air and views teasing us at every corner.
And then we reached the starting point of the Howth clifftop trails—a moment of pure awe. Before us lay a dramatic coastline carved by time, with turquoise waters crashing below and cliffs draped in wildflowers stretching endlessly ahead. It truly felt like stepping into a postcard.
The trail itself was around 5 to 6 kilometers long, a mix of gentle inclines and narrow paths bordered by thick bushes and wild blooms. Along the way, we ventured close to the lighthouse cliff, capturing photo after photo at every breathtaking viewpoint. Below one section of the cliffs, we spotted a small beach—dotted with sunbathers soaking in the generous Irish sun—and boats gracefully sailing across the shimmering sea.
The sheer vastness of the ocean and the peaceful rhythm of the waves left us completely spellbound.
On our way back, we chose a different trail to take in more coastal views. This new route didn’t disappoint—it offered a panoramic stretch of cliffside seagull nests, with birds soaring overhead, their calls echoing against the cliffs.
Back at the harbour, we were greeted by rows of colorful boats bobbing gently on the water, adding even more charm to the picturesque village. After a long and rewarding hike, our stomachs reminded us it was time for a serious meal—and we knew just the place.
We’d heard about the famous fish burger at Beshoff Bros, and we weren’t going to miss it. Let’s just say, the burger did not disappoint—it came loaded with a whole, perfectly fried fish nestled inside a bun. It was the ultimate trail walk reward—hearty, satisfying, and exactly what we needed to refuel. And of course, we shared a bit with the friendly seagulls too!
With full stomachs and happy hearts, we made our way back to the Howth Dart Station, this time deboarding at Blackrock Station on our return.
Our visit to Howth was nothing short of magical—a hidden gem just a short ride from Dublin, offering raw natural beauty and a peaceful retreat from the city’s energy. As we reached the end of our day, we already began planning our last day in Dublin, dedicated to shopping and soaking in the city centre vibes.
Howth left an imprint on all of us—a place where the sea meets the soul, and one we’ll carry in our memories for years to come.
