you know what’s sad?
If you study Environmental Sciences and work in the field later... to be able to do something for this planet everyday you will pay with your idealism and revolutionary spirit for it.
No, none of us loses it entirely.
Just the moment some environmentalist outside of the field comes to you with a thing like „we need to ban plastic packaging from our production“ your mind goes:“Heell yeah we do! wait but there is...“ and you jump into the whole project management process, cost-benefit analysis and also the dilemma of social and environmental impacts not resulting in the same rating (ah the dilemma of healthcare and most research fields). You feel responsible and you feel often hopeless because you see all the stones in your path to success.
We are the Frodos of our time, hiking up Mountain Doom while the land around us is already starting to burn and we need our Sams. Each day we steadily take one tired step closer to our goal, compromising and taking longer paths along the mountain because otherwise the danger of losing our progress is too high. We need our Sams to cheer us on and to help carry our burden when we are beaten down and hopeless.
So be a Sam. Be the environmentalist in the streets that makes the politicians and corporations LISTEN. Because we all are already within their business, we just need them to turn and give us the support we need to make everything happen.
