EXTERNAL SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGICAL PRESS
External social psychological press matters. When it comes to assessing climate dimensions in certain manners, 1 is always the weakest while 10 is the strongest association possible.
Although the “perfect” idea would be to get tens in every section that is completely unrealistic. After thinking for a while about this, I view my optimal individual climate dimensions as:
- Challenge: 10
- Freedom: 6
- Idea time: 8
- Dynamism: 8
- Idea Support: 10
- Trust + Openness: 11
- Playfulness: 8
- Conflict: 2
- Debate: 6
- Risk-taking: 7
As a whole, I love to be challenged. It doesn’t make me scared, I need it to be as successful as possible. When it comes to freedom, it is good, but it is not the most important thing for me personally. I love ideation and thinking of unique ideas. I could spent as long as I want brainstorming, because I don’t tend to know when to stop if I am having fun. I enjoy dynamism and the eventfulness of life in the climate. Idea support is a must for me. I care way more about having support than I do about the idea itself. Trust and openness is so important to any and every situation. If there is no trust then there is no foundation to build relationships or learnings on.
I happen to think playfulness is really important, however there is a disconnect from being able to actually incorporate this into my life completely. I clearly am not a fan of conflict. I simply don’t work well with it to be successful. A bit of debate on the other hand can be really helpful and goes along with my interest in being challenged. I rated risk-taking a 7 because I value it, however I tend to take calculated risks when going about things. After I learned about my individual climate dimensions I transitioned into my group. For each of these, we averaged all of our individual climate dimensions together.
Group Climate Dimensions:
- Challenge: 8
- Freedom: 9
- Idea time: 7
- Dynamism: 8
- Idea Support: 9
- Trust + Openness: 10
- Playfulness: 8
- Conflict: 2
- Debate: 6
- Risk-taking: 8
I noticed that other people don’t always like to be challenged as much as I do. Other people need more freedom than I personally care about. Lastly, my group mates tend to enjoy taking slightly bigger risks than I enjoy. All of the other dimensions appeared to be very similar to my individual dimensions. I am actually surprised how similar a lot of our dimensions ended up being, making our group press easy for me enjoy since it will tend to be relatively similar to my individual press.
I can honestly say that the closest I’ve come to finding where my optimal scores are met for Goan Ekvall’s dimensions was working at OCEAN this summer. There was so much encouragement, grace, and teamwork that challenged me to present my best work while I was there has continued to stand out. I keep coming back to this, but finding a work setting that meets your optimal dimensions is the best case scenario and something that we should all strive to do when it comes to career paths.
