The next day was even worse, so you called out of work to stay home and mope around. You can't wrap your mind around what happened yesterday. One minute you were throwing petty comments at each other and the next Bucky leaves. Granted there were things you shouldn’t have said to him but he also shared his harsh words with you.
“Steve wouldn’t fuck someone as revolting as you. Plus sloppy seconds isn’t his game.” You remember each word just as he said them.
Revolting. The one word kept replaying over and over in your head. Did he not find you attractive anymore? Was he that shallow that he’d call you revolting just because you didn’t always keep up with a picture perfect face? When he looked at you did he really find you revolting?
You’re so caught up in your thoughts that you don’t hear the knock on the door until you watch it open. Bucky steps into the apartment and looks around quickly; his eye catches yours and he stares for a moment unmoving. Your heart beats out your chest just thinking about why he was here. He rolls his eyes at you before he turns back and exits the apartment. You rush to your feet and towards the door.
“Wait, why are you here?” Your voice is strangled as you speak.
“I have property I needed to get. I assumed that you weren’t here since you didn’t answer the door when I knocked.” He stops but doesn’t turn to face you.
“I’m sorry I didn’t hear you or else I would’ve opened the door for you.” Your voice is softened.
“It’s fine, I'd rather get my things when you’re not here. I don’t need to see you anymore than I already will.” And with that he walked off.
Stunned at his words you mindlessly turn back into your apartment and walk to your bed sliding in and praying for sleep to wash over you.
You’re awoken to the sound of your phone ringing. Groaning as you wake up you answer the call.
“Hey sweet cheeks, heard you and tin man broke up.” Clint’s voice echoes through your phone.
“What’s it matter to you?” You roll your eyes even though he can’t see you.
“Well I just called cause we’re in the same situation really. Tasha just broke up with me a few days ago, so needless to say I’m calling to ask you out for drinks. So will ya?” He rambles on.
“That’s your solution? You want us to rebound together from people we left each other for?” You ask him.
“Technically I just asked if you wanted to go grab drinks with me.” He replies.
“Sure. Just make sure we have a driver cause I planned on getting shitfaced.” You reply bluntly.
“Damn that was much easier than expected.” He says in disbelief.
“8 on the dot tomorrow night. Goodbye hawk.” You say before hanging up and returning to your dreamless slumber.
You wake the next day at noon. As you wake up you check your phone. Three missed calls. Your heart pounds in your chest as you check to see who called only to be met with disappointment when you read the name Hawk and Tony. You knew deep down that Bucky wouldn’t call you but there was still a sliver of hope. Reluctantly you call Tony back.
“What the hell kid! Did you forget that you’re an avenger or did that escape your mind?” His voice boomed through the speakers.
“No it didn’t, I’ve been sick Tony. I slept through my alarm today and I’m sorry, okay?” You say softly.
“You should’ve told me yesterday that you wouldn’t be coming in. Everyone’s been asking about you and Barnes won’t tell us how you are.” He said.
Tears stream down your face as you think about having to run into Bucky at work.
“What’s wrong? What’d I say?” Tony’s worried voice asks you.
“We broke up.” You choke out.
“Shit.” He breathes out after your revelation.
“Want me to kick his ass? I’d totally do it just for you Y/n.” He asks playfully.
“No it’s okay Tony, thanks though. Again I’m sorry that I missed today without notice.” You sniffle trying to calm down.
“It’s okay, just know we’re here for you.” His voice softens.
“I know, thank you.” You say quietly.
“Enjoy the week off kiddo you deserve it.” He tells you.
“Are you sure? I don’t need a week.” You ask worriedly.
“I’m positive, rest up. We need you at your best.” He replies.
“Thank you.” You say.
“Take it easy.” Tony says before hanging up.
You set your phone back down not bothering to return Clint’s phone calls. Instead you get up and make coffee but then a knock at the door causes you to snap your head up to the sound. Worried it’s Bucky you keep quiet, you hope he’d walk in and you two could have coffee or you could make him breakfast.
“Open up sweet cheeks, I bought breakfast.” Clint’s voice rang through the door and straight to your head.
“It’s open.” Your voice sounds dull as you call out to him.
The door opens and in steps Clint with a plastic bag in his hand smiling like a child.
“Whatda bring?” You ask as you pour a cup of coffee.
“Stuff for breakfast, duh.” He says as though you should’ve known.
“You’re not cooking right?” You ask as you grimace just thinking about the time he'd cook for you two.
“Hey hey hey don’t make that face. That was one time I burnt dinner okay? I’m not that bad.” He teases you attempting to make you smile.
“Yeah cause after that I always made dinner until you started to eat out more…” Your voice trails off and your small smile fades away.
You think back to all the times you and Clint would share a home cooked meal. You always cooked because he enjoyed the way you put your whole heart into every dish. As your smile fades you also remember how he would always find an excuse to go out to dinner or that he had already eaten when in reality he was at Nat’s or was out somewhere with her instead of back home with his fiance.
You feel something touching your arm causing you to jerk away at the unknown object.
“Calm down Y/n, it’s just me. I know I’ll never be able to make it up to you but I’m extremely sorry for how I treated you. “ Clint spoke softly as he pulled you into a hug.
Strangely you let him pull you closely, you can’t remember the last time Bucky held you this close. Even in bed you two wouldn’t touch sometimes he’d even go into the living room just to sleep in his recliner. Those were the nights that you would cry yourself to sleep unknowing that you weren’t the only one shedding tears. Leaning into Clint’s touch you try to shake all the bad memories from your thoughts.
“It’s okay Kitty, it's just me. You’re safe here, I promise.” He softly whispers in your ear and rubs your back soothingly.
“I’m fine, I’m sorry it’s… it’s just been a long time ya know?” You mumble into his chest as you hide your face.
“No I don’t know what you mean Honey, you need to talk to me.” He said.
“Bucky- he well he hasn’t held me in forever, I missed human contact. Even in bed he’d make sure to never touch me or he’d go sleep on the couch.” You sniffle into his shirt.
As you sniffle you try not to break out in sobs so you breathe deeply, as you do you take in the smell of his cologne. Sandalwood and orange peel. When he would get dressed and spray it on you remember the times you’d tease him for smelling like a candle. He would smile and pick you up to toss you on your shared bed.
You definitely needed to go out and get drunk tonight so you can relax and stop thinking about all of this drama. Gently you push out of Clint’s grip and start to open the bag in it to find the ingredients for blueberry pancakes, you smile and shake your head.
As you mix the batter you tell Clint to wash the berries off and he does so not wanting to upset you again. You weren’t sure why you were so emotional over this, yes Bucky broke your heart but it also had been a long time coming. And you had already gotten over Clint or so you thought since he’s now in your kitchen making pancakes with you like none of this was out of the ordinary.
“So about drinks tonight..” Clint spoke up a bit interrupting your thoughts.
“Yeah where do you wanna go? I was thinking of this new pub down the street. I’m not sure of the name but I’ve passed it a few times walking home from work.” You ramble.
“Actually, Tony is having a party and I wondered if you wanted to go to that instead?” He asks softly.
“I can’t and you know that.” You grumble
“He’s not gonna be there, we all know you were the one who made him go.” Clint rolls his eyes at you.
“Do you want these pancakes or not cause if you can always keep rolling your eyes.” You respond sarcastically.
“Please? Tony has all the good food and booze! For free!” He whines like a child.
“Okay! Fine! But you’re buying me a new dress and new shoes.” You give in to his request.
“Can we pick matching colors?” He asks with a cheesy grin.
“What are we in high school?” You snort out a laugh.
“No but if I have to pay then I wanna match with you.” He huffs like a child.
“How about purple? That's good with you?” You ask as you finish up making breakfast.
“Sure. Purple sounds beautiful.” He cheeses at you.
Later that evening after breakfast and a shower, by yourself, you get ready to go dress shopping with Clint.
“Do we have to go to the mall?” He whines.
“Where else do you think I’m going to get a dress on last minute notice?” You roll your eyes at him.
“I don’t know, I’ve never been shopping with you before.” He says as he walks away from you like a stray child.
It makes you think back to the four years you spent together with him and not once did he go shopping with you. Not even to the grocery store. The thought makes you a bit sad as you relive it but instead your attention is drawn away quickly.
“He what about this?” He asks and wiggles his eyebrows at you.
You look at what he’s holding up to his chest.
A black silk lingerie set.
“Put that back down dumbass.” You laugh at his immaturity.
“Oh c’mon, I’ll pay for it. Pleaseeee?” He begs.
“Fine but it’s not like you’re gonna see it on me anytime soon.” You take the set from him and walk towards the dresses.
Sure it was probably stupid for you to be doing all of this, to be going out like you didn’t have your heart crushed the other day. Or that he’s not trying to make Tasha jealous or that you’re not secretly hoping to run into Bucky in a bomb ass dress. Who knows what will happen, you just hope things return to normal.
As you walk towards the dresses out the corner of your eye you see Clint skipping up behind you.
“How the hell did your mom just not leave you in a grocery store when you were a kid?” You ask playfully.
“The same reason you aren’t leaving me here, it’s cause I’m cute.” He says as his hands are behind his back.
This makes you walk closer to him so you’re face to face.
“You’re not stealing are you? If you are it better be good you dumbass.” You whisper.
He steps closer and leans toward your ear.
“No I’m not stealing, it’s a surprise gift for you.” He whispers into your ear before he kisses the skin of your neck.
This makes you take a few steps backwards, you accidentally bump into a dress rack.
“I’m sorry, old habit. It’s a bracelet, see?” He apologizes quickly then opens the sleek box revealing a delicate bracelet with amethysts stones along the length.
“Oh my god, it's beautiful, Hawk.” You whisper softly as you look at his gift.
“I thought the color would fit the evening’s theme.” He explains with a soft shrug.
“You really don’t have to do all of this just for one silly party.” You try to reason.
“It’s the least I can do, truly. You deserve to be spoiled even just for a night.” He spoke bashfully.
That’s a first, you’ve only ever seen Clint blush when you whispered dirty things in his ear during your time together.
“Thank you, I appreciate it. Now stop distracting me I have to find a dress for tonight okay?” You say with a shake of your head and walk off to the right section.
As you walk away your head is spinning. You have no idea what to think anymore. Why is Clint doing all of this? Does he want to make Natasha and Bucky jealous? Do you even want to make them jealous anymore? Why the hell did you agree to any of this?
“Excuse me, I’m sorry I didn’t mean to run into you. I wasn’t paying attention. ” You apologize quickly as you get snapped from your thoughts.
“Hey, Y/N. Long time no see.” Natasha says quietly. Your face drops instantly as your brain registers who you ran into.
“Oh yeah, long time. Well sorry that I ran into you but I’m busy so goodbye.” You say in a rush and turn to walk away.
“He’s not with me. But I am sorry that things turned out like this.” She reached out and grabbed your wrist.
“Do not touch me, I have no qualms about breaking your wrist here now.” Your voice is quiet and threatening.
This makes her release your wrist and you continue through the store by yourself. Soon you find the section that you need and you start to look for a perfect dress just for the situation. After a few hours you finally find the perfect dress one that will blow both Clint and Bucky’s mind. It fit every curve and dip just beautifully. Now you just needed to find a pair of shoes, you wanted a beautiful heel to accompany your dress. So you look around only to find Clint yet again but this time he’s in a dressing room. Quietly you walk over to the door to hear him muttering to himself.
“Screw her, Y/N looks ten times better than her in anything. God what am I even doing? Shit why won’t this zip up, fucking shit.” He mumbles quietly to himself as you assume he attempts to zip something up.
You also assume that he ran into Natasha. It’s nice to know he doesn’t have a plan either but it did give you an idea. You wouldn’t let him know your plans but you knew that he wouldn’t say no to you. You shake the thoughts from your mind and try to find a pair of shoes that go well with your dress and to put it in your car before Clint can see and ruin your surprise. Once you’re done you go back in the store to find Clint. He’s getting his suit tailored, he looks like a child fussing as he attempts to stand still while the tailor fixes his cuffs. You walk over to him and the tailor, softly you touch his arm letting him know you’re there.
“How’s it looking kid? Looks sharp right?” He asks with a smirk plastered on his face.
You stand there and take in the sight before you, he’s in all black which you didn’t expect since he did say to wear purple but then you notice his tie, it almost matched your dress except it has a design on it. An arrow.
“Wow I didn’t know you cleaned up so well.” You say in faux shock.
He smirks again before he walks towards you, getting close to your face.
“Trust me babe I’ll have your jaw hitting the floor later tonight with my looks.” He says with his smirk still plastered on his face before he walks into the dressing room.
Twenty minutes later Clint walks out of the dressing room with his suit and shoes all packed up and ready for the evening. On the ride home you think of the plan you devised earlier. You pray that things work out like you hoped.
