The stuff that don't get spoke
Fanfic where Clint wears this terrible contraption and pretends to be dead because, um, Clint, why
Jess was having a terrible day. Firstly, she’d woken up three times last night. Secondly, she had that dream, again. The one where she vividly revisited Clint’s anguished scream, revisited bursting through the door and revisited the feeling of blinding horror as she registered Clint and Barney lying bloodied on the floor, each with a piece taken out of them. So, picture her reaction as she walked through her ex(?)’s front door and saw him lying on the ground, motionless, an arrow sticking out through his head.
Her heart dropped. “Clint,” she said, breathless. “Clint!” She stumbled over to his motionless form. He wasn’t bleeding, but he wasn’t responding, either. No, no, no. Not this. Not this again. She crouched over him. “Clint,” she pleaded. She reached out, shaking his shoulder.
Suddenly, he sprang to life, jumping back out of her touch. Clint scrambled back, wide-eyed, until he realised he was looking at the stunned face of his ex (?) girlfriend. Friend girl. Thing. Girlfriend. Whatever.
“Jess?” he said, receiving the strange but increasingly familiar sensation of not hearing any of his own words.
Her face turned to comprehension, then, quickly, to anger. “I can’t believe it,” she muttered, standing up. Clint copied her, rising a few seconds later. He tilted his head in confusion. “What?” he asked quizzically, staring at her intently.
“Clint-” she started. “God, I can’t believe you!” Jess felt... she felt... she didn’t know how she felt. Well, she felt fucking mad at Clint. “I can’t believe you would pull something like this!” She turned, pacing. “I can’t believe you would do this kind of shit!”
“Jess. Jess!” Clint grabbed her arm, halting her furious march. “I don’t know what you’re saying.” His brow was furrowed. “Deaf, remember?” He tilted his head slightly.
She stopped and looked at him. Then looked away again. Then back. “Clint, I can’t believe you thought it was funny to pretend you got a fucking arrow in the head!” she said.
Clint looked lost. “I... It was just a joke?” he said, frowning. “April Fool’s?”
Jess gaped at him. “It’s- okay. It’s not a fucking joke, Clint! Do you know that I actually thought you might be dead? Or injured? Again?” At this point, she didn’t care how much of her words were getting through to him, she just was unbelievably enraged that he would do something like this. “I saw you right after you got actually fucking stabbed in the head with arrows, Clint. Not too long ago, if you remember. That’s not fucking funny. It’s really not funny.”
At this, Clint started to look uncomfortable. “I didn’t know you were going to come in, I thought maybe Kate or... or Barn...”
“Doesn’t matter. It’s not funny. God, Clint... so many times we’ve lost people close to us. Or had near misses. I don’t want to think about that happening to you. God knows the thought happens more than enough already.” Jess looked down. Her hands were shaking. She stuffed them into her pockets and continued. “I don’t want you to be dead, Clint. Enough people are dead already. I just want it to end.” She looked away, clenching her teeth. Don’t cry, don’t cry.
“Hey,” said Clint, softly, taking her by the arms. Jess looked up again. “I’m... I’m really sorry. I... just didn’t think. I know. I know. That’s me. I’m sorry.” He let go briefly and tugged the prop off his head. For a moment, Jess was reminded of Lucky, ashamed after having tracked his muddy paws over the carpet.
Jess sighed, running her hand through her hair. “It’s okay. I’m sorry for yelling. I just...” She looked into his eyes, shaking her head gently, and shrugged.
“I know. I’m sorry.” Clint dropped the object and opened his arms, taking Jess in. After a moment, she leaned into him, stretching her arms around his waist. He could feel her pounding heartbeat. He gently stroked her hair, swaying slightly. “It’s okay,” he muttered into her hair. “It’s gonna be okay.”
