Listen, I’ve always felt that the concept of Clockwork Smurfette was a missed opportunity.
I’ll be honest that the idea of a character whose entire purpose is to be someone’s “wife” feels reductive for me. While this trope might work in a darker story like Frankenstein (where the creator is forced into making a companion and the outcome is tragic), it feels out of place here.
Clockwork Smurfette, as she exists, is just reduced to be a love interest, they even force on her to be Clockwork Smurf’s partner, and that’s just all. Compared to Smurfette’s own evolution from a one-dimensional character to a more central figure, Clockwork Smurfette got nothing further.
Here’s how I’d reimagine her story:
The Setup: Before Sassette, Smurfette feels lonely as the only female Smurf, with no one to share her interests. Handy, noticing her sadness, decides to build her a friend, Clockwork Smurfette.
The Beginning: Clockwork Smurfette is a bit clumsy at first, being new to the world, but she’s kind and eager to learn. Smurfette is thrilled, and the village is happy for them both.
The Conflict: Over time, the other Smurfs start treating Clockwork Smurfette like they used to do with Clockwork Smurf, as a tool, expecting her to do all sorts of tasks. She becomes aware of this and begins to question her true purpose of her creation.
The Obsession: As the only Smurf who treats her with genuine kindness, Smurfette becomes the center of Clockwork Smurfette’s world. She grows protective, even defensive, especially around male Smurfs, including her creator Handy.
The Resolution: Eventually, Clockwork Smurfette meets Clockwork Smurf. Through their adventures, she learns to let go of her obsession with Smurfette and finds her own path.
The Ending: I’ll still keep the original ending when she leaves the village with Clockwork Smurf to join King Gerard’s castle, but more as a friend/sibling/teammate. She’s a skilled fighter and agile, qualities Clockwork Smurf lacks, making them a perfect duo. She also feels it’s best to step away to reflect on her past behavior and grow to be her own self.
