I feel like just saying this into the ether of 1am ….

And I’m tired of holding it in.

Most of the fandom toxicity habits/entitlement for indie animation has always been there. This is not new.

It’s just that the most popular indie animation at the time this was happening was RWBY—and the majority online hated the show/writers/Rooster Teeth so nobody batted an eye at it. And now that this behavior is happening to properties people like, everyone is acting shocked.

But I’m not. It literally has always been like this. It’s just that these new indie creators are learning at a much slower pace than the staff for RWBY the pivotal lesson to be had;

Showrunners Cannot Stay Influencers/Content Creators. ESPECIALLY WHILE THE WORK IS PREMIERING.

Parasocialism is a Disease and if I EVER had any advice to give as someone who has been in the industry for actually quite some time (but you’d never know it because I make it an intentional point not to advertise WHAT I do under my internet persona) it’s to never ever ever EVER directly involve yourself into fandoms as personally as creators do these days. It may sound cold, and downright rude, but without fail time and time again it just gets proven that people as a whole CANNOT HANDLE IT. Direct/personal interaction especially online and outside of professional outlets like Cons, Interviews, Meet & Greets just encourages crowds (not individuals this is important to note) to believe they have ownership over your IP in some way or form. Now where this mindset originated from? I have no clue. But it’s just an observation I noticed back while RWBY premiered, I noticed it with the showrunners of Voltron were extremely active in the fandom before things went tits-up, and I’m seeing it in modern indie-animations all over now.

And note to people who get into internet fights within fandoms…as someone that used to be that guy: it’s so not worth it dude. Just block/mute shit that makes you angry and move on. You will be much happier outside of it trust me. Is it upsetting to watch fandoms go down in flames? Obviously. But when all is said and done it’s much easier to walk away.

If you're not black, black people already assume youve said nigga or its variant at least once in your life. If they're interacting with you and bringing something up, its because they want you to stop doing that so they can still interact with you(if ur already friends)

No, your oc isn't too cringe or a Mary sue. Yes, it's completely fine that it looks similar to your other ocs. Yes it's completely fine that it looks similar to a Canon character design. No it's not uncreative. No the design isn't shitty. No the backstory doesn't have to make perfect sense or be all figured out. Yes it can be self indulgent or unrealistic or overly sappy. No you don't draw your favorite character too much. Yes you can flip flop between developing whatever characters you want. No you don't have to keep the parts of your character that you don't like or that make you uncomfortable just for the sake of consistency, realism or whatever else

Did you know that the rise of cringe culture, "Mary sues" and the whole sphere of art critics and ranters getting popular on YouTube around the 2010s/ 20teens contributed to alot of people having terrible self esteem about their creativity. That so many people still as adults remember the things they were mocked about as teens. Over what? Ocs? Drawing pictures of rainbow haired wolf princesses? Imagining they were dating sans undertale? Is that worth making people too scared to draw or make certain kinds of characters. Look in the notes. I guarantee you'll find more than one admitting they stopped doing something they loved because people made fun of them. For doing a hobby. For not being good enough.

You don't need to be good enough to do art. You can just do art. I'm rooting for you.

Gotta tell you guys something wild in the Chinese fan sphere

So some fanartist drew a “sexy” (read: booby) version of a (cartoon) character who is traditionally very non-sexualised. Fans of the character got mad about it because it’s kind of groundbreaking how that character is written and portrayed and this art totally ignores the entire point of the character. They demanded the art be deleted. In response to that other people said, well what the fanartist did may be distateful but they have every right to draw what they’re into. The two sides fight for days and each starts a harassment campaign and even report their “opponents’” accounts.

So far so typical. But things eventually come to a head and they decide that this will be settled by votes - not through a poll. Through donations to a children’s education charity via each side’s portal. Whoever can get the highest amount of donation wins.

And that is how this charity received over 1 million in donations in three days lol. Oh btw the “freedom of expression” side won by a landslide (960k to 40k)
