Part of a long fanfic project I'm doing featuring my two OCs, Dorago and Lily!
Warning: I must advise that there are wholesome father-daughter moments! Also there's flashbacks Dorago thinks about, including humiliation, insults, and stuff...but mostly wholesome stuff (I think).
Silence filled the air. Nobody was talking. Lily and Dorago sat next to each other and ate the cooked corpses nonchalantly.
"So how is it?" The dragon asked, not looking at the tiny fairy.
Lily looked at Dorago and smiled endearingly.
"It's yummy!" She chirped while the pieces of fleshy meat flew around in her mouth. Wasn't of proper manner.
Dorago let out another low hum from his mouth and ate quietly afterwards.
Lily, looking at the distinctive frown on Dorago, worried her. Maybe he wasn't like this always.
It would be nice to ask him in regards to his situation.
She slowly put a cooked squirrel leg down and looked at the rogue with sympathetic eyes (yet not knowing that she's showing it).
"Why do you not smile all the time?" Her head tilted sideways to show confusion, her ears drooping to express concern.
Having been asked this all the time, it seemed like an eternal questions coming at him like bullets grazing his back and aiming for his chest.
He had his many reasons not to smile. Mainly since he just...never does. All the emotional toil's done on the inside. Or maybe it's because of pain.
Pain he can never take away.
Laughter and humiliation.
Making him a false traitor.
He felt pained to talk about this to her.Â
Can't let her on the hook for a prolonged duration.
Dorago began to speak up.
"It's...not easy to explain." He put his head down, ashamed.
"When you're older, you'll get it."
Lily came closer to him and shook him gently, slightly impatient.
"I wanna know though...! I wanna see you smile!" Lily looked up at the sad dragon's face with puppy eyes, waiting for a response.
The dragon's eyes widened. At no point did anybody ask him of something such as this. He felt different. Not mad. Not angry. Not even bitter. It felt...warm all of a sudden. Warm and fuzzy. His tail even began to wag just a tiny bit.
Was this...what love feels like...?
Stopping himself from overthinking, he chuckled softly and cracked a small smile for the kid.Â
"Alright. But that's it, ok? You gotta learn that I can't be like this all the time."
"Whyyyyyyy?" She laid her head on his lap, sounding dramatic.
"Hm. Well, I prefer being like this than...forcing it out." His volume began to waver after those three words came out of his mouth.
"But it never means that I'm angry with you."
"Hm, OK!" Lily beamed again, delighted that he finally showed some tenderness for her. She giggled, looking at Dorago from above.
Her hands began to reach for his face...
Just the right angle and...one of her fingers touched his cheek partially before her hand moved away.
The feeling came back again. It felt so good it was like he was hallucinating, except this wasn't a delusion. Everything felt so real, and yet...it felt fake. He wasn't ready to be a father, nor was he ready for the dilemmas unfolded right in front of his eyes. Love wasn't even a thing for him.
He didn't even know what love meant.
But...from the looks of this kid grabbing onto his face...
He finally got a grip on what it means.
All of the points got connected. Problems were solved.Â
And now tears were being shedded.
Lily looked at Dorago once again, confused.
He then took his right wing and pulled Lily closer to him.
Feeling all things simultaneously, he couldn't bear to let go of her anymore.Â
His life wasn't complete without her now.
He wasn't letting her go.
Lily, on the other hand, felt much more skeptical than before. Maybe these were just customs.
So she hugged him back anyway.
"I got you, kid. I'm not letting go."
He rested his head on top of hers to justify his sudden overprotecting demeanor.
"Papa's here. I got you."
"And I promise I'm never letting you go."
