From retirement to replacement: My views on Chief Monroe
For those of you who did not already hear, Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Chief Rodney Monroe announced his retirement on Monday.
Most met the news with some surprise, and plenty of nice accolades to give. His legacy is best described by Greg Lacour in his #nestpoke series article, “Why Rodney Monroe Mattered”
While neither the Chief nor the department are perfect, its rare today to find the kind of praise being given to someone in law enforcement - or really anyone in the public eye as much as he. That to me is an even bigger compliment to the work he has done. We know the work continues, and by no means have we got it all figured out but somehow Monroe was able to make it work here in Charlotte.
Our depressing economic data might lead you to believe that Charlotte has a higher-then-not likelihood of facing similar acts of protest. However, through programs championed by Monroe like Cops and Barbers, and his community policing strategy, a conversation has started and lines of communication are open.
How do you replace someone like this?
As the search begins for a new chief we should not underestimate the power of this process. We need to ensure that our next chief represents the kind of city we are creating and the kind of city Chief Monroe make us today.
We don’t need to look for the best Chief for today - Monroe has already set-us up in the near term to succeed - we need a Chief for five years from now. No matter which direction you think our city is heading, its undoubtedly changing fast. The next Chief is will need evolve with the department in a similar fashion.
While other distractions around this story are popping up that might divert your attention from the selection process, don’t chase the story. There will be space for those conversations after the task at hand. We should stay focused on two things; properly recognizing the work of Chief Monroe, and finding a new chief who will lead this department forward in a manner consistent with the city we all are creating.
"The City is being asked to commit millions of dollars to a conceptual plan without a full disclosure of basic project elements we have required for all previous public/private partnership deals."
- Mayor Pro Tem Michael Barnes in the Charlotte Observer, talking about why the city rejected Studio Charlotte's plan to build soundstages on the site of the Eastland Mall.
(TL;DR: They asked for millions, but wouldn't give us details)
close, but no cigar
although i wasn't selected, i put my hat in the ring. congrats to billy maddalon.
Shawn Dorsch, chair of Charlotte's Airport Advisory Panel, has come under fire recently for emailing a state lawmaker and at least two leaders in neighboring counties in support of an airport authority. NBC Charlotte interviewed Dorsch on February 11, 2013 about the airport, and Dorsch told us why he thought an authority would be "natural and logical." Here is that unedited part of the interview.
five #socialmedia trends spotted in the midterms - by #vocus
as a political communicator who specializes in social media as a tool, i have to agree...
1) Social media levels the playing field - social media gives everyone an opportunity to participate. it also gives one an opportunity to create news through transparency and 24/7, two-way conversation.
2) You don’t have to be famous or local to have a big voice on local issues - one of my 2 fav hashtag's are #cltcc & #meckbocc. they are hash's that are used in the Charlotte area to discuss our local governments - Mecklenburg County Commissioners & Charlotte City Council. these hash's are always active and offer great comments and advice to our elected officials who routinely visit and participate.
3) Not being involved is #fail - there is no excuse to not be involved. use your computer or your mobile phone but most of all, use your voice!
4) Loyal online followers will make themselves heard - loyal followers are representative of tribes, and tribes create substantive and lasting change.
5) Slacktivism skews results… - slacktivism gives the appearance that one side is right, while the other is wrong. but the only thing slacktivists do is skew the results because of their inactivity.
