Just a reminder that when mass layoffs happen very rarely is it about holding anyone accountable and instead it’s about working the bottom line.
CNN and MSNBC might be laying off tons of people, but they aren’t doing that because of poor viewership post election. These layoffs were likely baked in to CNN and MSNBC’s financial plans, and are part of their strategy to show ever increasing quarterly growth as they come out of a season when tons of people were watching the news. And while some people getting laid off might have been involved in strategic choices to sane-wash Trump, I think it is more likely that the people getting the axe were more involved in the day-to-day operations.
For most people affected by the layoffs this isn’t justice, this is the ever grinding wheels of our current stage of capitalism that couldn’t give a shit about anyone’s holiday plans, their kid’s bills, their health insurance, or making the world a better place.
America is a country made of many tightropes but no nets, and I think we are all too hungry to cheer when someone falls.
