“I broke up with my girlfriend for you.”
Those were the words that changed your life.
It all started with you and Ben, who you have been friends with since you two were teenagers in drama school, traveling to New York just for fun. It was something you always did together, take random trips to the U.S., or around Europe; it was a way to bond and stay close with each other, especially since Ben has been gone a lot, working on new films and projects.
But, about a year and a half ago, you started to developed feelings for Ben. It wasn’t surprising because he’s such an amazing guy, not to mention so adorable. But the thing is, he has a girlfriend. He’s been dating her for about four years, and you could tell he really loves her and is so happy with her.
That’s the reason why you stayed quiet about your feelings. You didn’t want to ruin his relationship and you also didn’t want to ruin your friendship with him. So, you kept quiet, trying to push your feelings away every time you were near him. It wasn’t easy, but you were able to put on a fake facade around him. Thankfully, he never caught on, that was until you two decided to explore the city, and found yourselves at a pub.
It all started back in London, when Ben showed up at your place with a suitcase.
“What is this, Ben? Why are carrying a suitcase?” He smiled cheekily and stepped inside, pulling a couple pieces of paper from his jacket.
“I got us two plane tickets for New York City, tonight. I have also booked a fancy hotel room, and tickets to the Lion King on Broadway,” he told you simply, plopping on your couch casually. Your eyes widened as you stared at him, confused.
“What?” You didn’t know what to say. He grinned even bigger and nodded.
“We’re going to New York tonight. I know you’ve always wanted to travel there, it’s always been your dream to see a Broadway show, because I know it’s your dream to be on Broadway. So I figured, why not?” He shrugged, explaining why he made the sudden decision.
“Go pack,” he said, nodding his head towards the stairs. You giggled and ran to your room, grabbing your suitcase from the closet and quickly started packing, throwing in a few outfits, including a few dresses.
Once you had all your clothes, toiletries, shoes, makeup, and anything you knew you would need, you ran back downstairs to find Ben on his phone, smiling as he typed away. Your heart broke a little, knowing he was texting her. Or maybe it was Joe. Who knows.
“I’m ready,” you said quietly, suddenly not feeling in the mood to go.
“Are you okay? You seemed happy a little bit ago.” You nodded and looked down at your hands.
“I just realized that I’m going to miss a family member’s birthday party. It’s no big deal, though,” you lied through your teeth. He nodded sadly and stood. He pulled you into a hug, rubbing your back soothingly; he did this when you got upset.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t know. I can take someone else, if you wanna stay?” You shook your head, knowing the person he is talking about.
“No. Like I said, it’s no big deal. I’m pretty sure my family will still be in town. They should be staying for a few weeks, so I can see them when I get back. By the way, how long are we staying?”
“Four days. I know it’s not very long, but I have a meeting for my new project the day after we get back. I also figured four days isn’t too short and not too long.” You nodded and pulled back wrapping your hand around the handle of your suitcase, ready to roll it out the door. You grabbed your backpack that was going to be your carry-on and headed for Ben’s car.
“Well then, let’s get going!” You yelled excitedly, trying to be happy, but couldn’t shake the thought of him and his girlfriend out of your mind. It was starting to get harder to keep your feelings in, and you could tell Ben was catching on that something was bothering you.
Ben laughed at your enthusiasm and ran out with you out to the car, you locking the door after he walked out. You shoved your luggage in the trunk, along with his, and hopped in the passenger seat, Ben having already started the car.
“You ready?” He asked, looking over at you, smiling. You returned the gesture and nodded, excited to finally be going to New York.
Your flight wasn’t until eight, but you got to the airport at around 6:45, just so you could have time to get through baggage, security, and have time to get something to eat.
Once you both had your suitcases checked, went through check in, and got through security, it was a little past seven. You two got some Mcdonalds, just to tide you over for the flight.
Eight came pretty quick, and it was now time for you guys to board. Ben had bought first class tickets, which was surprising that he would spend so much just to take you to New York. Usually, he would buy the regular, coach seats for flights to the U.S. What makes it different now? Your mind was racing with so many thoughts that you didn’t hear Ben calling your name from his seat next to you.
“Huh? Sorry, I zoned out.”
“I was asking if you want to watch a movie with me? Are you sure you’re okay?” Damn. He was catching on. You smiled and nodded.
“Yeah. Just thinking about what I want to do when we get to New York.” He hummed, still not believing you.
“What movie should we watch?” He asked. You thought for a second before suggesting X-Men: Apocalypse. He chuckled and agreed, knowing how much you loved his character. If only he knew how much you loved him.
The flight went smooth, you and Ben staying up to watch movies, deciding to just spend the first day catching up on sleep.
When you two arrived and got through customs, then retrieved your baggage, you walked around to find the exit where your Uber was waiting. Thankfully, you found him fast, as he was holding a sign that said...Mr. and Mrs. Hardy. Of course. You sighed quietly and shook your head as Ben laughed loudly at the sign.
Yeah. It would be funny to be married, wouldn’t it? Hilarious.
“Hi. We actually aren’t married, or dating for that matter. Just two close friends taking a trip to the city,” Ben told the man as we stood in front of him. You put on a fake smile and nodded along as the man helped you load your luggage into the car.
The ride to the hotel was long, due to night time traffic. You were falling asleep, and of course Ben noticed.
“Why don’t you sleep until we get to the hotel, (Y/N)? We still have about another twenty minutes till we get there.” You nodded tiredly and rested your head against the seat, closing your eyes.
“Wait.” You opened your eyes as Ben said only one word, unbuckling his seat belt and moving to the seat in the middle, next to you. He motioned for you to rest your head against his shoulder, and you happily obliged. You shifted your body so you were leaning into him, still buckled, and rested your head on his broad shoulder. He brought one arm to wrap around you, keeping you close and making sure you were comfortable.
Sure enough, twenty minutes later, you were woken up by Ben telling you you were at the hotel. You groaned and unbuckled yourself and opened the door to stretch. The driver helped unload your suitcases and Ben paid him, thanking him for the service. You grabbed the handle of your luggage and trudged into the lobby with Ben. While he checked in, you stood next to him, practically falling asleep.
He tapped your shoulder, startling you. He laughed and told you he had the room key. After a seemingly slow elevator ride and an exhausted walk to the door, Ben unlocked the door and you immediately walked in and fell onto the bed. You fell asleep as soon as your head hit the pillow.
You woke up at four in the morning, which is actually nine in the morning back in London. You felt jet-lagged, but still well rested. Ben was still asleep in the bed next to you, and that’s when you noticed how fancy the hotel actually is. You were still confused as to why he chose this hotel, instead of a regular “chain” hotel like a Best Western or Marriott.
Deciding to stay awake instead of getting a bit more sleep, you reached for your phone to check social media, realizing you hadn’t checked it since you were on the plane.
You spent half an hour catching up on many different social media apps, and ended up playing a game. You were in the middle of some level when you heard Ben shuffle, groaning as jet-lag hit him. You looked over and admired the tired look on his face. That blonde curl fell over his forehead as the rest was tousled against his pillow.
“Morning, Ben.” He jumped a little, not expecting you to be awake.
“Why’re yeh up? Its,” he paused to check his phone, “four thirty in the morning.” He rolled onto his side to face your bed.
“I woke up and couldn’t fall back asleep,” you told him. He hummed and grabbed his phone, just like you did. You focused back on your game, until Ben suddenly appeared in your bed. Your eyes widened as he pulled you close to him.
“Ben? What are you doing?” You asked quietly. Sure, you two have cuddled, but only while watching movies. You have fallen asleep in his arms, but it was always just a small nap. Even before he had a girlfriend, you two never shared a bed. It felt weird, even if you two were close.
“I need a cuddle,” he muttered sadly. You were suddenly confused as he was the one who is sad now.
“What’s wrong?” You turned on your side to face him as his arm draped around your waist.
“My girlfriend and I broke up,” he admitted. You felt bad for him, although not knowing the reason why, you couldn’t see them breaking up. Ever. You were curious to know what happened so suddenly.
“I’m so sorry, Ben.” You brought him in for a hug, as best as you could with you both on your sides.
“It’s alright. I don’t want to talk about it right now, I just want to be comforted,” he whimpered, sounding so broken. You pushed your thoughts away and brought him into your arms. He nuzzled his face in your neck, letting out a content sigh. Somehow, you both fell back asleep, in each other’s arms this time.
Waking up again, you noticed the sunlight shining through the sheer curtains. You shifted a little to pull back from the body attached to you, realizing it was no use as Ben’s arms were gripping you so tightly. You smiled down at his sleeping figure, his head resting on your chest, lips slightly parted and soft breaths escaping. The memory of what happened at four this morning came flooding back, your heart breaking a little, but at the same time, a small glimmer of hope made its way in. As awful as that sounded.
Your daydream was interrupted by Ben waking up, moving away from your body to rub his eyes. He glanced at you through his lashes, the sun blinding him as he tried to get used to the light.
“Morning sleepyhead,” you said, pushing the hair away from his eyes. He smiled softly and sat up.
“I’m, uh. I’m sorry for that. I just, I needed some comfort from a friend.” There it was. Friend. You will always be a friend to him.
“It’s fine, Ben. I know how much you loved her, and I know she loved you. It must hurt really bad.” He nodded and stared down at his hands. He was about to say something, but your alarm interrupted him. You reached to turn it off and got up from your bed.
“We should start getting ready. I want to go to the zoo today!” You exclaimed excitedly, realizing that today would be around sixty degrees, a perfect day for being outside. He nodded and smiled sadly, watching as you ran to the bathroom to take a shower.
You two spent about four hours at the Bronx Zoo, then about an hour at the New York Aquarium. You could tell the whole ordeal with Ben and his ex was bothering him, you could tell his happiness was half fake. But, he loved seeing you happy, so he put his problems aside and walked around the sites with you.
Now, you two were back at the hotel, getting ready for The Lion King Broadway show tonight. You were beyond excited, as the movie had been one of your favorites when you were a kid.
You chose to wear a simple sweater and a nice pair of jeans, you didn’t feel like dressing up much. Ben wore a black dress shirt and a pair of black jeans; although you preferred when he wore color, you had to admit, you love when he dresses in all black; it makes him look edgy, and he gave off Greaser vibes, which you love.
“You ready to go, love?” He asked from the bathroom, where he was finishing styling his hair. You were slipping your heels on as you responded with a ‘yes.’ He walked back in and you had to keep yourself from drooling over him. He looked so handsome, with his hair slicked back, a leather jacket covering his body, the jeans hugging his-
“(Y/N)?” You were brought from your daze by him calling for you. You immediately blushed, hoping he didn’t notice you practically checking him out.
“I’m ready. Let’s go.” You grabbed your purse and made sure you had everything, then walked out the door, Ben trailing behind you. You hopped in the Uber that was waiting for you, and headed straight to the theatre.
As soon as you two were in, showing your tickets and you having your bag checked, Ben headed straight for the bar to get a drink. He ordered a cocktail while you ordered a wine.
The waiting was the worst part, you were so excited for it to start, and Ben kept drinking. You knew he was upset, but you didn’t think he would turn to alcohol to make him feel better.
Finally, the show started, you two in your seats, eyes glued to the stage. You sat forward a little, engrossed in the action, when you felt a hand on your leg. You immediately turned to Ben, only to find he was focused on the show, not having any reaction to where his hand was. You thought nothing of it, you had to admit, you liked the feeling. You passed it off as Ben was tipsy, and he thought it was the armrest.
The show continued, Ben’s hand remaining in the same spot on your leg, but halfway through, he began to rub soft circles into your thigh. Your body tingled at the sensation, your heart racing at the thought of his hands on you.
After the show ended, you two made your way out of the theatre, slowly, due to the amount of people there were. Once you were out of the crowd, you took a deep breath, enjoying the open space and trying to calm yourself down.
“Let’s explore the city a little. It’s too early to go back to the hotel,” you suggested, walking in a random direction. Ben followed, agreeing with your comment. You two wandered around, peering up at the large skyscrapers, the flashing billboards, the bright lights of the city.
You were so lost in your own mind, you didn’t realize you wandered so far away, you had no idea where you were. You had no idea what the area was, it being dark was not a great help either.
“Where are we, (Y/N)?” You heard Ben ask, as if reading your mind. You shrugged and stopped, taking in your surroundings. You spotted a sign that simply said ‘pub.’
“There’s a pub, you want to grab some drinks?” You asked, honestly not caring about his answer. You wanted to forget your feelings for him. Sure, you did judge him for using alcohol to make himself feel better about his break up, but now you understood.
“Sure, let’s go.” You practically ran towards the entrance, noticing it was a hole-in-the-wall bar. Walking in, you were greeted nicely by a bartender, asking what he could get you and Ben. You ordered a couple shots of tequila, which is usually not your choice, but you knew it would help. You also ordered a cocktail, while Ben decided to get a beer.
You two sat down at a table far from others and waited for your drinks.
“So, how are you holding up?” You asked him, in reference to his break up. He shrugged and looked down. A waiter came up to your table with a small tray of drinks. He set Ben’s glass of beer down first, then your two shots and your cocktail. You thanked him and ordered a couple more shots, and a beer. He nodded and told you they’d be right out. You immediately downed the shots, shuddering at the burning sensation. You then took a small sip of your cocktail, looking to Ben, who took a huge drink from his beer.
“I mean, I really did love her, but some things just aren’t meant to be.” You knew he was hiding something, but you decided not to push it.
Your other drinks arrived and this time, you offered Ben one of the shots. He happily took it and clinked your glass with his. Together, you two down the alcohol, cringing at the feeling once again. You two continued to talk and drink, both of you loosening up and starting to giggle at random things.
After a few more shots and a glass and a half of beer later, you two were piss drunk. Since you were sat in a curved booth, you slowly started moving closer to him, eventually leaning your body against him, laughing loudly as he said something.
“C-can I admit ssssomething?” He slurred, wrapping his arm around your shoulder and bringing you closer. You nodded, a huge smile on your face as you began to speak too.
“I n-need to admit something as well,” you slurred back.
“You first,” he poked your cheek, giggling in doing so.
“I like you. No f-fuck that, I love you, Ben. I’ve loved you for a-about a year and a half now,” your heart raced as you finally admitted your feelings. You felt a huge weight lift off your chest, but not daring to look at Ben.
“I broke up with my girlfriend for you.” You looked up at him, shocked at his confession. You tried to form a sentence, but you were too taken aback. He really broke up with her for you?
“You-you broke up with her, for me?” He nodded, his lidded eyes due to the alcohol in his system. You, however, sobered up a little.
“I love you, (Y/N). I really do. It felt wrong to be with her when I had such strong feelings for you. I broke up with her a few weeks ago, and I planned this trip to New York to show you how much I care for you,” he told you, piecing all of your thoughts together.
The first class plane tickets, the fancy hotel, the tickets to a Broadway show.
“You love me?” He nodded, reaching for your hand.
“I do. And I hope I can take you on a date when we get back home because there’s a restaurant I’ve been wanting to take you to. I found it with Gwil, and I thought you would absolutely love it.” You smiled softly at his words, knowing that while he was with his girlfriend, he was thinking of you.
“Did you tell her you broke up with her to be with me?” You asked him, genuinely curious.
“Yeah. I didn’t want to lie to her. I also didn’t want her seeing reports about me being with a “new girl” and wondering if I was cheating on her. I told her I started developing feelings for you about six months ago. It started out small, but the more time I spent with you, I started to fall in love with you. I realized that what I’ve been looking for in someone has been right in front of me, since I was a teen.” Your heart soared hearing him talk about you like this.
“I love you, Ben. I’d love to go on a date with you. And thank you for this impromptu trip to the city I’ve dreamed of going to.” He smiled softly and leaned forward, green eyes darting down at your lips. You nodded and leaned in as well. Your lips crashed together and although you could only taste the drinks that he had downed, you didn’t care. His lips were so soft and warm, they fit perfectly with yours.
You hummed into the kiss, reaching up to cup his cheek and keep him close. Your entire body felt like it was on fire, you didn’t want to stop, but you had to breathe. You broke away to catch your breath, eyes closed in bliss as you rested your forehead on his. He leaned forward once again and pressed a quick, soft peck to your lips.
“Does this mean I can sleep in your bed with you tonight?” He asked cheekily. You giggled and pushed him away jokingly, only for him to grab your hand and keep close to you.
“I love you, darling,” he said adoringly, eyes full of love and lust.
“I love you too. Can we go back to the hotel now? I feel like we have some catching up to do,” you winked, bringing him in for another kiss.
“Of course, baby. Let’s go.” You two paid for your drinks and hopped in a cab, telling him the hotel you were staying at.
“Let’s not take things far tonight, love. Let’s start slow, even though we’ve known each other for so long. I don’t want you to think I just want to sleep with you.” You shook your head, agreeing with him.
“I didn’t mean to make it sound like that, Ben. I just want to cuddle with you and kiss you and play with your hair and fall asleep in your arms.” The cab pulled up to the hotel right as you finished speaking, interrupting your conversation. Ben paid the driver and thanked him as you two stepped out. He brought you in for a hug and pressed his lips to your forehead.
“Anything you want, love.”
