Trees. It’s that time of year when the Pyracanthas are on fire! Beautiful as hedges, or trained against a wall, or even grown as a tree like this example. Full sun produces the best glowing berries and an added benefit is that the presence of thorns means they act as a security barrier. I just love a multitasking plant. Trees. Look at this perfect row of pleached cherry trees set in the beautiful grounds of @wivenhoehouse We were fortunate enough to steal a night away and this was our backdrop at breakfast. Pleached trees are a really great way of dividing space, blocking unwanted views or even softening the sun’s rays, but all done in a totally natural ‘meant to be there’ way. Trees. Well this is more of a shrub, but can also be grown as a small standard tree. Colutea or Bladder Senna are so called for their rather lovely inflated seed pods, which pop once fully ripe in order to spread their seeds. Such a delightfully perfect plant for our coastal gardens, easy to grow, they like full sun and tolerate pollution very well. Trees Shade People. It is so important to have access to shade in order to shelter from the hot summer sun or indeed rain. When out in a park we actively seek it, yet there are many who strangely view that same relief as unnecessary when in their own space. Plants as well as people benefit from the protection of a tree canopy, not to mention the aesthetic and often sensory effect that trees can add to a garden. Trees. The gorgeous flowers on this Buddleja globosa, or the cleverly named ‘orange ball tree’, are an absolute bee magnet. Technically a shrub, but more often reaching tree proportions, this beauty is stunning and well worth planting instead of the more common Buddleja davidii (the one with the purple flowers). Trees. Black elder or Sambucus nigra ‘Black Lace’ provides the most divine early summer colour and scent. Surpassing it’s greener cousins with it’s contrasting colours it deserves a place in every garden.
