When I asked this wolf how she feels about the economic benefits of the clear cuts in her forest, she rolled her eyes, shrugged her shoulder and slowly walked away. It’s weird to sit in a quiet forest far away from any infrastructure or civilization only to hear the distant noise of a chainsaw creating yet another scar in the landscape and a deep wound in the mycelium knowledge network of the rainforest. It took less than 200 years to cut down almost every old growth tree in British Columbia which were replaced with inferior second and third growth and came with a major loss in bio diversity. In Canada and BC we don’t have the constitutional right to a healthy environment - there is no law that protects us and that should be a concern to everyone! We must find more sustainable solutions because nature is what makes BC supernatural. Coastal wolves roam and patrol the shore lines and intertidal zones but mostly live under the canopy in the dense rainforest of British Columbia. It’s maze in there and we were extremely lucky when this female showed up on an old tree stump to check us out. Her sense of smell is far superior to ours, helping her to identify and understand her surroundings in a much better way. And even though we were in her territory she didn’t show any sign of concern or aggression towards us and was calmly minding her own business after making sure we didn’t pose a threat. I love these respectful encounters with wildlife and hope they can shift the image and reputation of these apex predators for the better. Paw patrol - a quick check in on the new guys. This encounter blew my mind. I had just set up my camera and took my head down for maybe 30 seconds to adjust my settings when I suddenly heard a rock shifting close by. Out of nowhere a coastal wolf showed up and was standing 15 ft away me. She must have snug up on me outside of my peripheral even though I had positioned myself with the entire shoreline in my view. She was curious and inspected me for a minute or so before she continued her patrol. These wolves are phenomenally smart animals and not the monsters they are often portrayed as. It’s a shame that the BC government does nothing to protect them and even worse culls them as a scapegoat for an out of control logging industry.
