so i know its been quite a long time since ive posted any formal reviews, & that reggae is no where near the kind of music i normally listen to or even review, but i just have to give a shout out to these guys. Coast Tribe is a full fledged Coastside reggae band with hints of hip hop, ska & even a bit of hardcore punk. Saturday night, they stormed the stage at the OPL in celebration of releasing their first full length record, "Relativity". Being a local band with very deep roots in the coastside, fans came out in droves, packing the small, but still premier, coastside music venue to the "gills". their live show brings high energy with extremely dancable tunes. their set consisted of several tracks which are found on the new record, as well as several unreleased songs & scattered covers ranging from reggae standards like "smoke two joints" to an instrumental version of "stand by me". their stage presence is commanding yet very symbiotic with the crowd, which, in this particular case, escalates to more & more fun. as i said, this evening was in celebration of the release of Coast Tribe's first full length record, "Relativity". they recorded & mixed the ten song cd at J7 studios in moss beach, with producer deegan mack adams. the record has a great flow to it, starting strong with several high energy, strong reggae styled tracks, with a quick cool down in the song "What Tmrw Brings", then picks right back up, going strong til the end. the one stand out track for me was "It's Gonna Happen", its heavy distorted guitar riff is reminiscent of early 311, while layered with jazzy saxaphone & dj scratching. while as ive said, reggae is not really my top choice of music, Coast Tribe throws in enough twists to make something unique & praiseworthy, & their support for all things coastside truly speaks to my soul.
