Blue Beauties: The Heirloom Button At Colonial Williamsburg
Since it is turning cool in my neck of the woods, I thought I’d show off these large coat or jacket buttons, which I spotted in the Tailor’s Shop in Colonial Williamsburg. Decorative or embellished buttons became a cottage industry in the 19th Century and you can still find them produced into the 20th Century. I found a box of such old buttons in an antique store.
The blue ones here are one of many types of covered button, here covered with heavy silk threads, undoubtedly over a wooden form as the shop in CW, like all the other shops there, is devoted to do everything as people did it in the 18th Century. Such wooden forms are hard to find today, so some people turn to the small wooden pieces that were meant for parts on children’s toys. For some styles of heirloom buttons, you can use small plastic rings too, or you can simply cover over a boring modern button. You can find directions for similar buttons in Nancy Hehring’s 50 Heirloom Buttons. After you read it, you may begin to feel that only by making a button to match your latest sewing project will you achieve perfection.

Top 10 Stylish Sherwani Buttons to Add a Royal Touch to Your Outfit
A sherwani is the epitome of traditional elegance and grandeur, making it the perfect attire for weddings, festive celebrations, and formal cultural events. While the fabric and embroidery play a significant role in defining the look, sherwani buttons serve as the finishing touch that enhances its royal appeal.
Selecting the right sherwani buttons can elevate your outfit, transforming it from ordinary to extraordinary. Whether you prefer classic metallic designs, gemstone embellishments, or intricate handcrafted details, these buttons can make a statement.
In this guide, we’ll explore the top 10 stylish sherwani buttons to add a regal touch to your ensemble.
1. Gold-Plated Sherwani Buttons
Gold buttons are the ultimate choice for a majestic and sophisticated look. Their rich appearance complements heavily embroidered or velvet sherwanis, making them ideal for grooms and grand occasions. Pairing gold buttons with a matching brooch can further enhance the outfit’s luxurious appeal.
2. Gemstone Studded Buttons
For those who love extravagance, gemstone sherwani buttons are a perfect choice. Adorned with emeralds, rubies, or sapphires, these buttons add a regal touch. They work exceptionally well with sherwanis featuring intricate zari embroidery, adding depth and color to the attire.
3. Pearl-Inlaid Buttons
Pearl sherwani buttons offer a blend of elegance and tradition. They provide a softer yet refined look, ideal for pastel or ivory-colored sherwanis. These buttons pair beautifully with coat buttons for those who want a uniform theme across their attire.
4. Handcrafted Enamel Buttons
For a unique and artistic appeal, enamel sherwani buttons are an excellent choice. Crafted with intricate hand-painted designs, these buttons allow for customization and personal expression. A Jodhpuri button set with enamel detailing adds a vintage touch to traditional outfits.
5. Royal Kundan Buttons
Kundan-studded sherwani buttons bring an old-world charm to ethnic wear. They are perfect for heavily embellished sherwanis and complement traditional jewelry effortlessly. A Jodhpuri button set featuring Kundan work enhances the overall elegance of the attire.
6. Classic Metal Buttons
Metallic sherwani buttons, whether in gold, silver, or bronze tones, offer timeless sophistication. They are versatile, making them suitable for various fabrics, from silk to jacquard. If you're aiming for a balanced yet regal look, pairing metal coat buttons with a metal-accented brooch is a great styling choice.
7. Antique Finish Buttons
Antique-finish sherwani buttons cater to men who prefer a vintage aesthetic. With detailed carvings and aged textures, these buttons create an old-world charm. They complement earthy tones and traditional patterns, making them perfect for cultural events and royal-themed weddings.
8. Fabric-Covered Buttons
For a subtle yet classy look, fabric-covered sherwani buttons blend seamlessly with the outfit’s texture. These buttons provide a cohesive appearance, especially for minimalistic sherwanis. Combining fabric-covered buttons with coat buttons in a similar shade enhances the uniformity of the look.
9. Chain-Link Sherwani Buttons
For a bold and regal statement, chain-link sherwani buttons add an extravagant touch. These buttons connect through delicate chains, creating a striking visual appeal. They are commonly used for high-fashion and groom sherwanis, where attention to detail is essential.
10. Jodhpuri Button Set
A Jodhpuri button set is a great alternative for men who want an elegant yet subtle look. These buttons are often designed with metallic accents, geometric patterns, or embossed designs. They work exceptionally well with Indo-western outfits, bandhgala suits, and modern sherwanis.
How to Choose the Right Sherwani Buttons
With so many options available, selecting the perfect sherwani buttons requires careful consideration. Here are a few factors to keep in mind:
1. Match with Sherwani Fabric
The button material should complement the fabric. Gold buttons or gemstone-studded designs pair well with rich fabrics like silk and velvet, while metal and fabric-covered buttons suit simpler materials.
2. Coordinate with Accessories
Your sherwani buttons should harmonize with other accessories, such as brooches, turbans, and cufflinks. A well-coordinated look enhances the overall aesthetic.
3. Consider the Occasion
For weddings, opt for elaborate buttons like Kundan or gemstone-studded designs. For smaller gatherings, a classic Jodhpuri button set or enamel-finished buttons will suffice.
4. Ensure Proper Fit and Attachment
Some sherwani buttons are removable, allowing for customization. Ensure they are securely attached to prevent mishaps during an event.
Final Thoughts
Selecting the right sherwani buttons is crucial in achieving a refined and royal look. Whether you choose gold buttons for a grand appeal, a Jodhpuri button set for a versatile touch, or enamel designs for a modern aesthetic, each option adds a unique charm to your outfit.
By coordinating sherwani buttons with your attire and accessories, you can create a polished and sophisticated appearance. The right buttons don’t just complete your sherwani—they elevate it, ensuring you stand out with elegance and confidence at every occasion.
