From stomping mud, to shaping, to sitting down on this earthen furniture -- here is the final product.
But first you might be wondering: why build a bench out of mud?
Good question.
Humans and other animals have been building shelter out of Earth since forever.
Earth is abundant.
Earth is everywhere.
And this technique, called cob, is simpy a combination of 5 common ingredients: clay, sand, straw, water & human energy.
All the clay came from a few feet away and we ended up buying a bit of sand & straw to find the perfect mixture. Really the most "costly" factor was time. But, as we plan to spend many hours sitting on this bench for years to come ... i think it was worth the effort.
A cob cottage. I never thought of this- cob is inexpensive construction, but doesn’t do well unless it’s in a dry climate. This family built a house with a cob interior, so the house protects the cob.
It has a cozy seating area w/built-in shelving.
At first I thought this was a wine rack, but it’s for shoes. And, it’s cleverly located next to heat, in case they have to dry out.
Another living area.
This is really is a family-oriented home.
Upstairs are the sleeping areas.
Lovely home office - love the tree and glass in the nooks.
Another heat stove on the 2nd fl. and a place to hang clothes. This is a very comfortable, casual, family home.

It's working!
My weather station in located in the nice, thick shade of a tree outside the studio. On the screen you can see the outside temp hit 95F (35.5C) in the shade today and inside temp is 68F (20C). And the roof isn't even insulated yet! Hooray for earth walls and passive solar design!
