Your character is in a situation where they need a cover identity. What are they up to, and what is their go-to disguise/false persona?
I won’t lie, I simply do not have it in me atm to write out entire scenarios so this is gonna be very vague and mayhaps I will reblog and add to it more in depth later. In general though, she’s well known enough and enjoys being well known that she isn’t going to wear a disguise or hide her identity unless absolutely necessary.
However, regardless of the situation, Lady A— does have several go-to disguises and cover identities. If she just needs a false identity she has a collection of invented members of Society that her and other members of the upper-crust cycle through when they don’t want their activities known of - this is always followed by a day of gossiping about the used alias, spreading various different tales of their previous whereabouts to further obscure the truth and have an extra layer of security.
As far as actual disguises go, she spent years of her adult life in the Neath working in theatre and opera and ballet, so wearing a costume and playing a role comes easily to her. She generally has a large enough personal collection of costumes amassed over the years to quickly Frankenstein together different pieces of them to make a disguise if needed. One thing that is key however, and this really is crucial, is that she absolutely REFUSES to wear any disguise that makes her feel unattractive - if she has multiple options for a disguise, she will always make her decision based on what she feels is most flattering over something more practical. She simply HAS to be the best looking person in the room (by her standards) at all times.
Disguises usually end up being something more traditionally feminine out of personal preference, which also has an added bonus of working in her favour because people unfortunately have biases, including gender biases even with the Neath’s more accepting culture, and no matter how strong and dangerous she actually is the fact that she’s petite and fair and has “delicate” features means that it’s a harder sell to disguise herself as a more traditionally masculine figure. She also generally steers clear of working-class figures, ie factory women and domestic workers, because she was once told by someone (who was then agreed with by others present) that she carries herself “as though she comes from wealth”, and if she needs a disguise, regardless of whether she agrees with that opinion, odds are she shouldn’t risk being suspected in any way. Her most effective and well-used disguise is that of a generic “Actress” - an obviously theatrical costume (such as Columbina, Marguerite from Faust, etc), heavy makeup, a wig to disguise her hair colour while at the same time carrying a more theatrical wig (such as a rococo style powdered wig). She’s trying to give the general vibe of coming or going from a performance or rehearsal.
Of course, this isn’t touching at all on fancy dress costumes, of which she has multitudes, but given that those don’t disguise her identity all I’ll say on that is that she prefers more conceptual costumes - ocean, music, morning dew, board/card games, etc - and hates costumes of time periods and other countries (not so much hates them on other people, she’d just never in a million years choose to wear them.
And naturally, she is not immune to the dramatic appeal of hiding her identity with nothing more than a big swishy cloak with a hood.
