Networking - Nottingham Creative Community
I met Kirsty, a writer and social entrepreneur, last Wednesday. She’s the founder of Bees make Honey Creative Community, a social enterprise in Nottingham, offering support for people entering and working in the creative industries. I thought it would be a good idea to meet her to talk about my symposium idea and her involvement in the local creative scene.
It was great taking to Kirsty, as she is a key member of Nottingham’s creative community. She’s also Project Manager of Cavology a shop in Cobden Chambers located in Nottingham’s Creative Quarter.
Kirsty suggested a few contacts worth checking out:
Jim Shorthose (Cultural Research & Creative Consultant) - Organiser of the Petcha Kucha events in Nottingham.
Dizzy Ink - Print studio and workshop in Cobden Chambers (Risograph Printing).
First Tuesday - social enterprise networking event at Antenna.
There’s plenty for me to check out. I see this type of networking as the start to become more involved in the local creative community. Meeting Kirsty is a typical example of the ‘you don’t you what you’ll get’ kind of experience - resulting in finding out about new things, people and events I wouldn’t have otherwise come across.
Kirsty also told me about her experience with The Hive at NTU, the university’s Centre of Entrepreneurship and Enterprise. I think The Hive will be a great resource for me, especially if I want to start my own business.
Other networking events I have attended recently:
“Talking Creativity.... Get Creative!” - Petcha Kutcha event at the Malt Cross - 27 February 2015
The Recorder and Hot Rum Cow - Raw Print event at the Lace House - 4 March 2015
Conclusion: Although I find networking a bit daunting at times, I am starting to see all the benefits from doing it. Networking is an ongoing process which is crucial to any creative practitioner / entrepreneur wanting to become part of the local creative community. I believe that as with anything, experience will lead to more confidence and will therefore make networking more enjoyable. Good job I like talking!
