Days to come stand in front of us like a row of scented candles- golden, warm, and vivid candles. Days gone by fall behind us, a gloomy line of snuffed-out candles; the nearest are smoking still, cold, melted, and bent. I don't want to look at them: their shape saddens me, and it saddens me to remember their original light. I look ahead at my lighted candles. I don't want to turn for fear of seeing, terrified, how quickly that dark line gets longer, how quickly the snuffed-out candles proliferate.
'Candles' by C.P. Cavafy. Translated by Edmund Keeley and Philip Sherrard.

Sometimes I wonder, sweetest love, if you Were a mere dream in a long winter night, A dream of spring-days, and of golden light Which sheds its rays upon a frozen heart; A dream of wine that fills the drunken eye. And so I wonder, sweetest love, if I Should drink this ruby wine, or rather weep; Each tear a bezel with your face engraved, A rosary to memorize your name... There are so many ways to call you back- Yes, even if you only were a dream.
Rumi, Nightingale Under The Snow. Translated by Annemarie Schimmel.

Without that passion and urge, there is a gradual oozing out of hope and vitality, a settling down on lower levels of existence, a slow merging into non-existence. We become prisoners of the past and some part of its immobility sticks to us.
