A female Hawfinch (Coccothraustes coccothraustes) on a snowy morning. Utilising its thick, large beak, the bird favours eating plant seeds and such. The seeds of the maple tree this individual is perched on are also one of the foods I often see it eating. Its rather peculiar scientific name originates from Greek, meaning “to break/shatter seed/kernel”.
