Have you seen the @washingtonpost report on child labor in the cacao industry? The chocolate field has a complicated history, and the issue of child labor propelled me into starting Laughing Gull Chocolates. There are no simple solutions, but the issue remains that child laborers are a part of the chocolate story, and The Washington Post has done important work reporting what happens in the fields and in the industry. The good news is that there is a lot more to the story of chocolate. Many of today's craft chocolate makers and chocolatiers use ethically sourced chocolate. We are proud to be one of those chocolatiers. Chocolate is a complex industry, from tree to bean to bar to truffle; it encompasses human, environmental and social issues, and so much more. This article leaves me with many more questions than answers, but it is important we hear the stories exposed. From here, we can do more to make a bigger difference in the world, whether it is voting with our dollars, advocating for legislative change, or starting a nonprofit.
