Gosh, after reading your thoughts and ep7 hints about the direction they are taking on Haxby, I'm pissed! Ep6 to me was sadly Charlotte's most boring episode! Honestly, I expected more from an all-women writing and direction team. Yes, it's good that it's female-centric. But please throw in at least one interesting man for Charlotte! Haxby was that man in ep2 n then the angry sex was WOW! So why ruin it?! I'm tempted to write a fanfic to fix this but my writing kinda suck!
I feel you, overall. Charlotte’s been easily one of the most intriguing characters to me all season, a woman whom I have come to deeply love even when I don’t entirely like her. I agree that episode 6 was not her most interesting episode, but mostly, imo, because Margaret, Lydia, Will, and Florence all had SO MUCH stellar material – they were the ones with the big emotional moments and the most significant narrative shocks. And that’s fine! Charlotte’s arc gets a little bit of a breather and some time to do some set-up while others’ arcs hit bigger, more climactic points.
And thankfully, her story is full of interesting relationships! Her relationship with Margaret is so rich and realistic, full of friction and resentment and misunderstanding but also deep love. Her relationship with Lucy makes me wish I had a sister. Her relationship with Will is heartwarming, with Mary Cooper heartbreaking, with Howard a horrifying mess but a powerful one. I will admit that although I find Marney likable, I personally don’t find her relationship with him very interesting, perhaps because he strikes me as more of an idea than a person at this point. Conversely, while I seldom find Haxby likable, I have since the very beginning found both him and his relationship with Charlotte absolutely fascinating and hilarious and, yes, surprisingly, delightfully hot. Not to mention surprisingly complex. And while I don’t expect them ever to have a “romance” per se, I want to continue exploring that complexity very much.
I don’t wanna get into anything about 1.07 yet, but yeah, overall: I feel you. I’m disappointed and concerned. But for now, all I’ll say is that the writing on this show has been, overall, excellent, with a refusal to shy away from exploring consequences and complicated relationships, and full of characters who defy easy classification as “bad” or “good.” And I hope that will ultimately stay true across the board.
