Subramaniam: We need to verify before releasing details on Cadbury
TELUK INTAN May 27:
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said the delay in the revelation about pig DNA found in Cadbury chocolates was because it wanted to investigate the matter first.
As a responsible body, the Health Ministry, he explained, had to verify the claims before releasing them to the public.
“The preliminary findings on the matter was leaked on social media, which is how the people came to know about it,” he said after visiting Teluk Intan Hospital here, this morning
Subramaniam was asked to comment on a potential lawsuit against the Ministry and the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) by a Muslim NGO.
The NGO has threatened to file a suit following the detection of porcine DNA in two samples of Cadbury Dairy Milk Hazelnut and Cadbury Dairy Milk Roast Almond chocolates.
Muslims are prohibited from consuming pork or pork related products.
Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM) had threatened to sue Cadbury for RM100 million and divide that money among those affected by the contamination.
Rumours that the chocolates were tainted with porcine DNA made rounds on the Internet before it was confirmed by the Health Ministry.
Cadbury has since recalled two batches of their affected products.
Subramaniam said while it was up to the NGO to file a suit, the Ministry would explain the matter to them.
