I bought these pastry and bun at Country Brot in Northpoint City. The upscale outlet is managed by Four Leaves Bakery. The first is the flaky Apple Croissant 🥐 (S$2.40) with chunks of apple 🍎 inside. I like that the apple chunks still offer some resistance to the bite and not totally soft.

The round bread with a hole in the centre is the Kaya Bun (S$1.70). The centre well is filled with kaya (咖椰) which is a coconut 🥥 jam made from a base of coconut milk, eggs, sugar and pandan leaves 🌿 as a flavouring. The bun is fluffy soft and the kaya is thick and flavourful but not overly sweet.

Mứt dừa (Coconut Jam)

One of the Vietnamese tradional snacks but people don’t make and sell them all year round but just only in Tet (Lunar New Year). So if you want to eat then you have to wait for a long time. ヽ(￣ω￣(。。 )ゝ 

Btw ~ Mứt dừa (coconut jam) + tea = the best combination.

Sis bought this Kaya Swiss Roll (S$12) from Rich & Good Cake Shop. The long tube of rolled cake is about 12 inches long and wrapped in a piece of plastic. The cake itself is soft and fragrant with a whorl of coconut jam within. Though it tasted good, the price is hard to stomach as it had gone up by at least 100% over the last 6-8 years.

I passed by Moji Bakery every day after work so I would dropped in to buy their baked pastries which are pretty good. Picked up a flaky sweet Kaya Puff (咖椰角) for S$1.20 and three savoury Seremban Char Siew Pau (芙蓉烧包). These baked char siew buns are priced at 1 for S$1.80 or 3 for S$5 and are filled with juicy diced barbecued pork.

From PrimaDéli (百得利) at Ang Mo Kio Hub came this Pandan Kaya Fudge Cake (S$5.30). Two-layered sponge cake with kaya (咖椰) fudge in-between and on top. I like it for the not overly saccharine taste yet still giving you that traditional fragrant Asian flavours we are so used to. As I sipped on the milk tea and indulged on the cake, memories of my younger days drinking tea and eating kaya & butter toasts came flooding back.

A sweet bun and a savoury bread from Swee Heng 1989 Signature at Causeway Point. The Cheesy Black Sesame (S$1.80) bread is a meal by itself. Black sesame seeds are worked into the dough then drizzled with mayonnaise and sprinkled with cheese for a savoury treat.

The Pandan Kaya Bun (S$1.50) has desiccated coconut all over the dome-shaped top with a dollop kaya or coconut jam in the centre. A pandan leaf is wrapped around the circumference of the bun to impart fragrance. The fluffy green bun is filled with sweet and fragrant coconut jam (kaya) which although is nice, is a little too sweet for me.

It had been a long while since I last tried Foodfare’s NTUC Breakfast Set (Member S$1.80 / Public S$2.20). Price had gone up by S$0.40 per set. This typical Singaporean breakfast set consisted of a cup of coffee or tea ☕, two slices of kaya & butter toast 🥪 and two half-boiled eggs 🥚.

My guess is that the eggs 🥚 aren’t exactly fresh as both the egg yolks did not come out intact. Normally for the Half-Boiled Eggs, I will add in a splash or two of dark soya sauce and a shake of white pepper. I give it a slight mix but avoid breaking up the egg yolks if still whole then gulp down the eggs in two mouthful. After that I slowly munch on the toast and sip on my milk tea.
